Before Charles Dickens penned A Christmas Carol in 1843, Christmas wasn’t the festive, family-centered holiday we know today. In fact, the celebration of Christmas had been on the decline in England. Industrialization had shifted focus to work and productivity, leaving little room for lavish celebrations.
