In the latest episode of "Becoming the Ultimate Fitness Coach with the Jock and the Doc," hosts Dr. J and Scott tackle the important but often poorly understood topic of client compliance. As always they are focused on increasing results in training for fitness and supporting the business of fitness, With their combined background in personal training and human behavior expert, they understand that designing the perfect workout and nutrition program is only half the battle - getting clients to fully commit to and follow that program is just as crucial for achieving results.
Dr. J emphasizing that compliance needs to be a top priority for any fitness coach. Even the best program in the world won't get results if clients aren't sticking to it consistently. She points out that there are two big mistakes coaches make when trying to improve compliance: (1) not dedicating enough focus to it from the very start of working with a client, and (2) trying to talk about compliance during training sessions. She argues that compliance needs to be woven into the fabric of the client-coach relationship, not treated as an afterthought; and substantive conversations need to happen in a separate, dedicated time and space outside of sweat-dripping, heart-pumping workout sessions.
Scott chimes in that the best way to lay the groundwork for excellent compliance is to have in-depth consultations with clients, outside of the gym environment. These sessions do not have to be long, the recommendation being about 15 minutes. During these sessions coaches can explore clients' goals, motivations and potential obstacles in-depth, without distractions. These meetings allow coaches to understand how to best support each individual client in staying consistent, overcoming hurdles and taking ownership of their programs. Scott reflects on mistakes he made early in his personal training career and that he still sees when working with other personal trainers; the tendency to have all consultations on the gym chatting briefly between sets. He learned over time that compliance is about the plan that works for the client and their lifestyle, which requires a recurring discussion topic, not a one-off conversation.
To wrap up the insightful episode, Dr. J and Scott share examples of questions and topics to address during compliance consultations. The hosts emphasize that conversations should be two-way, with the coach actively listening and making adjustments based on the client's needs.
With their trademark humor and wisdom, Dr. J and Scott deliver excellent insights into why coaching compliance is so critical for personal trainers, and how dedicating real time and attention to it separates the good from the great in the fitness industry. Tune in to this episode to learn practical strategies for setting clients up for success with their programs. Just like in fitness pursuits, consistency is everything when building strong coach-client relationships.
