This is the first show of year 3 with the generous support of The Heart of Innovation's new sponsor, Reflow Medical, the pulse of medical ingenuity. Show co-host started this first episode expecting to spend the entire show talking about her visit to their facility where game-changing technology is being manufactured to treat the advanced stage of peripheral artery disease, known as critical limb ischemia. But then co-host Dr. John Phillips, who was on call at his hospital in Ohio, was called in Saturday morning to help save the limb of a patient. Dr. Phillips was able to convince his Nurse Practitioner Brittney to join us LIVE on the show to share the story about how she and Dr. Phillips rallied their team to forgo time-off on a Holiday weekend to work together to try and save a patient from losing her leg. You don't want to miss this episode as it's powerful! It drives into the importance of healthcare teams to remember why they got into the healthcare business and to treat each patient as an individual human being. Saving the individual patient discussed on this episode relied upon the use of a hyperbaric chamber to help heal a minor amputation, known as a transmetatarsal amputation (the toes). Nurse Practitioner Brittney talks about this type of treatment, why it's not typically used over a weekend, especially a Holiday weekend, and how she galvanized the Ohio Health team to rally around this patient to prevent her from losing a full leg by next week.
