Janey chats to comic author Rachael Smith on making sense of life through comic art on the release of her highly acclaimed new book
Glass half empty
Grief, mental health problems, and a troubled childhood leading to her to self-medicating with alcohol. The pandemic made all her problems worse: she was isolated and depressed. Stuck scrolling the internet for horrible news, both global and personal. People were either terrified or bored, or a heady mixture of both. It was a weird time.
Alcohol turned from a way of making everything a party into making everything bearable. A worrying turning point. She got better through therapy, and journaling through comics. Comics are how she make sense of the world. Making comics about her life helps her work out how she is feeling about things, and she realised she was feeling pretty awful about her relationship with alcohol. She’s feeling a lot happier now.!
