Hello and Welcome to the Redwood Wellbeing Podcast, where each week I am dedicated to supporting parents on the journey of nurturing their child's healthy relationship with food and their body image.

Through practical, everyday strategies and tips, I help you to become empowered to make a lasting difference in your child's wellbeing journey.

In this episode I discuss;

  • How despite well meaning intentions from anti diet coaches to 'ditch the scales', this doesn't help you make peace with them because keeping them out of sight isn't a long term healing strategy.
  • How our ultimate goal with the scales should be neutrality, where we will be able to see the number without a strong emotional response.
  • My personal tumultuous journey with the scales and how I healed my relationship with them through exposure therapy and mental discomfort.
  • If you need to work on your relationship with the scales, shield your child from your journey, and ensure they see a neutral response from you when you see the number.
  • How children have no meaning attached to scales until people provide meaning, so we can choose what meaning we give the number on the scales, to help our child remain neutral about the number.
  • How to talk to your child about bathroom scales and what to say if they begin their own preoccupation with weighing themselves.
  • How scales can have a peaceful place in a home, but it's not helpful for a child to be weighed at school, because of the connection to health status, and student comparisons.
