Sam Morris is the Founder of Zen Warrior Training and has a powerful presence about himself that is unlike anything my wife and I have experienced. At the age of 24, Sam was in a car accident that was caused by a drunk driver which left him paraplegic. Sam used his breath to connect with his soul and overcome the feelings of guilt and regret from his injuries. Today, he teaches students Zen philosophy, meditation, and somatic disciplines that have personally healed his mind and his relationship to his body.

Key Takeaways ● Sam shares his story and the accident that ended up costing him the use of his legs. ● When Sam became lucid and realized he would never walk again, he began to take deep, deep breaths. Something changed. ● Sam came to the realization that: Breath is spirit. ● Despite being connected to his breath, it was still working to get out of bed every day. Sam still had grief. ● Sam can not afford to be careless with his body. Aging with a disability is no joke. ● Sam accumulated roughly 2 years over a 15 year period of being in and out of hospitals and operating rooms. ● It took Sam about 14 years to become a coach and to inspire others. It took him that long because he just didn’t feel ready. ● “Attitude is the most empowering thing people can learn”. ● J.R. shares an example of how a good attitude has served him well in life. ● Do you really have to project yourself as this super resilient human? There’s actually real value in being vulnerable. ● Show up with all your humanness. ● We often confuse what creates value in our culture. Your trophies, media appearances, and other accolades do not represent your true value. ● Sam had to forgive himself first before he could forgive the drunk driver. ● The accident was something Sam would have never chosen, but he can understand how his soul made a choice. ● We have to create a new map for ourselves and for our lives. A map that doesn’t rely on our past experiences, but instead a map that comes from our imagination. ● We can move forward in an intentional direction that feels right to us.
