Repeated visits to the doctor and medical testing left her without a diagnosis. As her pain worsened, imaging revealed she had multiple broken ribs and vertebrae. At 42, a bone marrow biopsy confirmed that she had the blood cancer multiple myeloma. Freedman underwent intensive treatment including chemotherapy and a stem cell transplant.
