Welcome to today's episode of Places People Purpose. In our last episode, we ventured to the breathtaking seaside town of Tarifa. Today, our journey takes us to the north of Spain, where we explore the remarkable city of Santiago de Compostela. This city holds a unique place in the hearts of millions worldwide due to its historical, cultural, and spiritual significance, notably as the final destination of the Camino de Santiago, one of the world's most famous pilgrimage routes.

🌍 Episode Highlights:

- Galicia's Diverse Heritage Santiago de Compostela is nestled in the northwestern region of Spain, known as Galicia. Like many other parts of Spain, Galicia boasts a rich history of diverse settlements, dating back to Celtic tribes whose influences can still be seen in the region's culture and language, known as Galego. The Romans left their imprint on Galicia, as evident in well-preserved sites like Lugo's Roman walls. The region's history includes periods of Visigoth rule and intermittent Moorish incursions.

- The Birth of Galicia During the early Middle Ages, Galicia emerged as a Christian entity during the Christian Reconquista, as Christian forces sought to reclaim the Iberian Peninsula from Muslim rule. Today, Galicia enjoys the status of an autonomous community within Spain, recognizing its cultural and regional diversity while preserving national unity.

- Autonomy and Cultural Identity The establishment of Galicia as an autonomous community was a significant step in Spain's transition to democracy following Francisco Franco's death in 1975. The region's autonomy was ratified by a referendum in 1980, granting it its own government and legislature. This autonomy has allowed Galicia to protect and promote its cultural and linguistic identity, including the preservation of Galego as an official language and the celebration of its rich traditions.

- Galicia's Natural Beauty One aspect that captivated us during our visit to Galicia was its natural beauty. With lush hillsides, mountains, and a stunning coastline, it's reminiscent of the scenic landscapes we experienced growing up in Washington State. The region's geology, influenced by tectonic plate movements and glaciations, has given rise to diverse topographic features, making Galicia a haven for nature enthusiasts.

- Santiago de Compostela's Rich History Now, let's dive into the captivating history of Santiago de Compostela. The city's name, derived from "Sant'Iago," or Saint James in Galician, reflects its foundational myth tied to the apostle Saint James. According to Christian tradition, Saint James's disciples transported his remains to Galicia, where they were discovered in the early 9th century. King Alfonso II recognized the significance of this discovery and ordered the construction of a church, which eventually evolved into the grand Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela.

That concludes today's episode of Places People Purpose. We hope you've enjoyed our journey through Galicia's diverse heritage, stunning natural landscapes, and the enchanting history of Santiago de Compostela.
