Den ryske pianisten Josef Lhévinne studerade vid Moskvakonservatoriet från elva års ålder.

Efter att ha varit pianolärare 1900-06 gav Lhévinne konserter och bodde då mest i Berlin. Före Första världskrigets utbrott 1914 gjorde han sex konsertturnéer i USA, dit familjent Lhévinne emigrerade efter krigets slut. Båda makarna blev lärare vid Juilliard i New York. Josef Lhévinne är berömd för sin enastånde teknik och utomordentliga kontroll av ton och frasering, som möjliggjorde hans visioner av musiken. Mer information på sverigesradio.se/p2
