Richard Epstein arbetade först som lärare och pianist i Berlin och Dresden. 1904-14 var han kammarmusiker och lärare i London. Därefter flyttade han till New York, där han blev en eftertraktad ackompanjatör till bl.a. sångerskan Emmy Destinn och violinisterna Mischa Elman och Fritz Kreisler.
