1 From Conflict to Connection: A Mindful Approach to Resolving Disputes and Transforming Relationships 15:54
Conflict is a part of life, but the way we handle it can transform relationships, workplaces, and even global dynamics. Traditional conflict management often reinforces separation, seeing others as problems to be managed. In this podcast, I explore a mindful approach that shifts this perspective by integrating mindfulness, meditation, and the concepts of interconnectedness ( Interbeing ), Equanimity , and Impermanence . By recognizing that everyone shares a universal desire to be happy and free from suffering, we can address conflict with compassion, clarity, and balance. This not only reduces stress and promotes mental wellbeing for those handling conflict but also lays the foundation for a more harmonious and peaceful world. Discover how adopting mindfulness in conflict management can create lasting change—from personal interactions to global relations.…

1 Guided Meditation - Understanding the Holographic Universe - The Divine Matrix and the Timeless Connection 12:05
This is a guided meditation that I promised I'd do for all of my followers on Instagram and social media who asked me to record this. It's about 'Understanding the Holographic Universe, The Divine Matrix and the Timeless Connection. It tells us that there is no need for information to travel across distances or for time to pass for our intentions to manifest. Instead, everything we seek—whether it be healing, abundance, love, or any other form of manifestation— is always with us, everywhere, all the time existing within an infinite matrix of possibilities. Once our prayers and meditations are inside of us, they also instantaneously exist everywhere else.…
People believe that prayer is old-fashioned, but science is showing us that prayer actually works, even at a distance and even if the person being prayed for isn't aware that they are being prayed for.
Reverse meditations are great meditations to do to help you with pain management and also to help others who may be suffering. I've recently used a reverse meditation to help me with the pain post dental surgery and as many of us find the dentist a less than pleasant experience I hope that this helps some of you.…

In this podcast I talk about why so many people who want to run their own business, be there own boss and follow their passion never do it, because they believe that they are not ready or they fear failure, or they have too many 'what if's' and not enough faith. I use two examples to illustrate how any normal, everyday person can do what they want to do. One example is Kate who has been walking the UK coastline for some years now who had no experience in how to do this when she started out and you can read her post on her Facebook page here - Kate Walks The Coast - #katewalksthecoast. The other examples I use are the twelve Apostles of Jesus who were instructed by Jesus to go out to towns and villages and heal the sick and the lame, cast out demons and mend the brokenhearted. Some of these Apostles had only been following Jesus for a few months. They were not religious people and had no formal training. They were just everyday, normal people were being asked to do miracles, things that ‘normal, everyday people’ weren’t expected to do or even believed that they could do. The moral of this podcast is don't leave it too late to follow your passion. You only have one life on this fragile earth. Make this year your year. Own it. Live your life. It may not always be easy, but it will be worthwhile. My Question is, Can The Use of Force Ever Be Considered An Act of Compassion? For example, if someone was physically assaulting another person could another person use physical force to stop them, and if so, could this be seen as an act of compassion? From my own personal perspective, there has to be an active element of compassion. Otherwise, I feel that we would be far from compassionate by standing back and letting someone become harmed if we had the capability and means to stop it. Yet how does this fit with the bigger view of compassion? This audio answers that question. And if you'd like to read the full blog post, go to this link - https://nfps.info/compassionate-use-of-force/…

How Your Beliefs and Values Create Your Identity and Control Your Behaviour. It is estimated that over 90% of all stress related illnesses are down to the lifestyle choices we make. So what drives these dysfunctional behaviours? This podcast explains.
How a Change In Lifestyle Changed People's Genes At the start of this study the genes of the whole group were read. Then the group was split into two groups. One group got the conventional pharmaceutical intervention. The other group were given lifestyle changes. They were taught to meditate, use stress reduction techniques and given a different diet. At the end of 90 days the genes of each group were re-read. The genes of the group who got the conventional treatment hadn't changed. But the genes of the other group, who were taught to meditate, use stress reduction techniques and given a plant-based diet had changed. 500 genes in each individual had changed the way they were expressing themselves. And most of those genes were previously contributing to the cancer! This tells us that if we change our lifestyle. Change the way we think, act and eat, we can radically change our health. Have a great day.…
Why Stress Management and Mental Health First Aid Training Doesn't Work In this podcast I explain why stress management and mental health first aid training doesn't work. What you resist persists. So what you give your energy to help create it. I also talk about learned helplessness. This is another part of the stress response. And it's as damaging as the fight and flight response. It's like trying to drive your car with the brakes on. To counter this you need to engage the other part of your nervous system. This is the parasympathetic part of your autonomic nervous system. And you do this simply by breathing. Have a great day.…
How The Body Goes Into Famine Mode When In Stress When we perceive that we are in fear we trigger the stress response. When that happens the following occurs: Our blood pressure increases; Cortisol levels increase; Your Metabolism slows down; And we put weight on. So what do some people do? They go on a diet, which ..... Basically self-justifies the fact that there is no food available ... So the body's famine response is justified! On an ongoing basis this maladaptive response harms us. Sadly a lot of people live in a state of stress 24/7 365 days a year. That is no way to live.…
This is a very important video so please watch to the end. It may help you and/or someone you know. I was asked recently if I was worried about stepping down from the business. The main reason for the question was because the person asking it was worried about their job. That is because they were uncertain about whether or not they would be made redundant. To top that they don't even like the job they are in. But don't want to lose it either. There a double-dose of stress for you right there. When we experience fear we create stress. Stress compromises our immune system. It's so effective at doing that, that surgeons use stress hormones therapeutically to shut down a persons immune system during organ transplants. This is so that the receiving body doesn't reject the new organ. So what about a person living in a constant state of fear? Well, their immune system will be constantly compromised. That means that they are more prone to getting sick and picking up diseases. Ask yourself this question ...... Is it really worth getting ill for something you don't even like and don't want to do?…
Tell Me What You Want, What You Really, Really Want Now, for fear of sounding like a Spice Girl, this is a very important question. It is important because most people actually don't know what they want. At least what they really, really want. If asked they'll normally say something like ..... "I want more money." "I want to be more successful." "I want to be happy." But that won't make it happen. I'll be covering this and more on the two-day retreat which I am going to be running early in 2023. But for now I want to know what you want. What would you like in the training during the retreat. I was thinking of the following: how to meditate, mindfulness, quantum thinking, mindset, nlp, etc. But, what's more important for me is that you get from it what you want. What you really, really want. So let me know by either leaving a comment below or by messaging me directly. And feel free to share this if you wish to. I'm on a mission!…
You Must Know What You Want If You Want To Be Successful
You can have anything you want in life if you have the ability to use you thoughts to create what you want in your imagination. You also need a few other components, two of which are faith and determination.

I recently had a conversation with someone who told me that their wife is having to have her neck surgically re-built with bone taken from other parts of her body. The injury was caused by an eight-year-old child violently pulling the member of staff's hair causing the person's head to jerk back violently. More recently in the news a teaching assistant who was ‘punched, pinched and kicked’ by a five-year-old boy in her reception class has been awarded £140,000 in compensation. Now (generally speaking) a five-year-old or eight-year-old child would be classed as a minor and possibly even categorised as vulnerable, due to their young age. As such, any training given to staff in the schools they attend or the care home they reside in to enable staff to control and restrain them may be 'low-level' training, involving techniques that are designed not to cause any harm to the child. But where does a member of staff stand if they are violently attacked by a child (someone under the age of eighteen) who may also be under the age of criminal intent (which is 10 years of age in the UK, 12 years of age in Scotland) if the techniques they have been taught don't cater for such an attack? This is important to know because someone under the age of criminal intent cannot commit a crime in the UK, but they can still behave violently as we can see from the above examples. "So if a child is attacking you can you act in self-defence against the child?" Why The Term 'Least Restrictive' Has Nothing To Do With Physical or Mechanical Restraint. Every now and then I hear someone stating things like "Staff must use the least restrictive method when restraining a patient" etc. Or "any physical intervention must be the least restrictive option", or words to that effect. However, those statements are wrong. They are wrong because they are being used in the wrong context. I do understand the principle, ethics and morality argument. No one wants staff rushing in and immediately resorting to high level techniques where they are not required. But that isn't the point I'm raising here. The point is the term "least restrictive" has nothing to do with a physical or mechanical use of force option. Let me explain. Don't Blame Staff When You Provide Them With a System With Failure Built in (HSG48) One of the things that boils my blood is when staff are blamed for something going wrong, when the failure is systematic. What I mean by that is that the system they are provided with is at fault and/or staff are being given legally incorrect advice and instruction. The commonly held belief that incidents and accidents are simply and solely the result of 'human error' by the worker themselves is not necessarily true in all cases. Blaming staff for the accident or error has for many years been 'convenient' for many organisations and also many training providers. Why? - Simply because they can provide unsafe systems of work or inadequate training and then just blame any failure on the individual member of staff, with statements such as: "If you had applied the technique properly it would have worked". Latent failures are made by people whose tasks are removed in time and space from operational activities, as opposed to 'active failures' that are usually made by front line staff. Examples of the types of people involved in latent failures, therefore, could be: trainers, decision makers and managers and typically involve failures in health and safety management systems (design, implementation, monitoring and supervision). In terms of physical intervention, an 'active failure' could be a member of staff who failed to implement a technique properly, which resulted in a service user or another member of staff being injured or killed. But what we are finding now, is that the technique or system of intervention was going to fail anyway. This is primarily because the technique had a high degree of failure built in and was therefore highly unlikely to work in such situations where it is required. Add to that that: 1. The staff were poorly trained; 2. Given incorrect information and instruction; and 3. The company policy is legally flawed; 4. Creates uncertainty in what the staff can or cannot do when using physical intervention. These latent failures can result in staff operating from a position of fear and anxiety, as opposed to being operationally competent. This in turn increase the margin for error by creating an opportunity for an active failure to occur. According to HSG 48: "Latent failures provide as great, if not a greater, potential for danger to health and safety as active failures. Latent failures are usually hidden within an organisation until they are triggered by an event likely to have serious consequences". In virtually every case, if a proper investigation is carried out, these latent failures are uncovered, which will probably admonish the individual of any blame for the error and place the failing at the feet of the organisational management systems that have contributed to the failure. In designing our courses, we have looked deeply into our responsibility in preparing individuals for what they are being trained to do. We have looked at the foreseeable human errors that could occur as a result of latent failings and then either eliminated them or reduced the likelihood of them occurring, which is what good health and safety risk management requires. So, if you'd like to become a trainer in a competent, legally defensible and risk assessed system of restraint check out the webpage here - https://nfps.info/physical-intervention-trainer-course/…
Do You Do MAPA Physical Intervention Training? This is another question I regularly get asked. And the short answer is no, we don't do MAPA Physical Intervention Training. So, what is MAPA Training and what does MAPA Training stand for? MAPA stands for the 'Management of Actual or Potential Aggression', which is basically a name that the organisation calls itself and what it does ie., MAPA Training, which has now been taken over by CPI (Crisis Prevention Institute). That's it. In the same way we are called NFPS Ltd., so if people ask us do we do 'NFPS Training' we say yes, because that is training we (NFPS Ltd) deliver. MAPA isn't a qualification or an 'approved' or 'formally accredited' system of restraint (physical intervention). It is basically an in-house MAPA certification scheme. Unlike MAPA we do offer a qualification in the form of a BTEC Level 3 Award in Physical Restraint Instruction. This provides a structured process of learning and development through a recognised Educational Awarding Body, with internal and external verification and standardisation and quality management processes in place. And if you'd like to find out more about our BTEC Level 3 Restraint Instructor Award Course you can see the course webpage here - https://nfps.info/physical-intervention-trainer-course/ . “What is PMVA Training and Do You Deliver PMVA Trainer Training?" These are questions I constantly get asked. So, what does PMVA mean? PMVA stands for the 'Prevention and Management of Violence and Aggression'. Which is basically a healthcare term for Physical Restraint (also known as Physical Intervention, Control and Restraint, Positive Handling, MVA, etc., etc.). It is primarily used to prevent a service user or patient harming themselves or others. PMVA training is not a qualification or an endorsed or recognised standard of any kind. It is just a healthcare term for Physical Restraint Training. That's it. Our BTEC Level 3 Restraint Instructor Award Course is a PMVA Trainer Course - https://nfps.info/physical-intervention-trainer-course/ And many healthcare organisations already use our training to train their PMVA trainers. This is because our course comes with a BTEC Level 3 qualification. Who would be liable for giving illegal information and instruction (with regards to physical intervention, self-defence, handcuffing, etc.)? Well the short answer is, it would be you! Now you may be able to take some action against the trainer who provided the information to you. Forgiveness is a powerful act that can set you free and liberate you from suffering which will reduce the effect of negative stress in your life. Stress as, many famous scientists and biologists tell us, is responsible for over 90% of all physical and mental illnesses and diseases. In addition, many people have to deal with conflict in their lives. Conflict, aggression and abuse at work and even in some cases at home and disputes and disagreements with other people that cause anger and hatred. In this podcast I am reading some extracts from a book called the 'Book of Joy' which tells the story of a meeting between the Dalai Lama and the late Archbishop Desmond Tutu. In one chapter they speak of the power of forgiveness and I'd like to share some of that with you. Oh, and if you think forgiveness is easy, then you've probably never tried it. Forgiving someone is an act of strength, not weakness. It is anger and hatred that are signs of weakness.…
When most people think of meditation they conjure up images of people sitting cross-legged for hours with serious expressions on their face trying hard to empty their minds, and that puts a lot of people off meditating. The reality is meditation is merely focussed attention and the opportunity to meditate is always present, even if it’s only for a few seconds and I thought I’d share some tips with you in the hope that it may encourage you to try meditation by dispelling some of the myths about it so that you can take advantage of meditation's many benefits. One myth (already mentioned) is that before you start to meditate you must first empty your mind of all thoughts, but that’s not true because for a mind to be empty it has to be empty of something? This is a misinterpretation of the Buddhist teaching on signlessness, inter-being and impermanence. To meditate all you need to do is focus your attention on one thing and the easiest thing to do is focus on your breathing. For example, like a lot of people I used to get frustrated at being stuck in traffic, but now I see it as an opportunity to meditate and all I do is focus on my breath and to help me do that I follow the advice of a great Zen Buddhist Master Thich Nhat Hahn who taught me that if I said to myself: “Breathing in I know I am breathing in”, as I take an in-breath and “breathing out I know I am breathing out” as I exhale my breath, I can simply and easily concentrate just on my breathing which grounds me in the present moment. Sometimes when I’m in a queue in a shop for a few minutes I simply use that time to focus on my breathing, even if it is for only two or three breaths. When I’m working on my computer and an email comes in, what many people do is react to that by stopping what they are working on to go to the email, read it and then answer it. What I do is stop, take two or three breaths, and then decide whether I need to respond and look at the email or continue with what I was doing before the email came in. And many times now, before I answer an email I will read it again slowly, whilst also breathing slowly whilst concentrating on the words in the email (as that is a form of meditation) and then stop and take three breaths whilst focussing on my breath entering and leaving my body before I respond to it. There are so many opportunities for you to meditate, even if it for a few seconds, and if you do it regularly you can train your mind to not only enjoy the present moment but build resilience as well as benefiting from all of the other physical and mental benefits of meditation. And if you’d like to know more about those benefits you can listen to this podcast or read the blog post here - https://nfps.info/why-do-i-meditate-have-i-gone-over-to-the-dark-side/ I’d be interested in your comments.…
You may have noticed that I have posted various articles and podcasts about meditation, and that’s generated some interesting conversations with people, many who I have known for many years and some who are very good friends. Some people, I am sure, think that I’ve gone over to the ‘dark side’ as they see meditation and mindfulness as some form of ‘weird’ spirituality thing. Others think that I have possibly gone soft, but none of that could be further from the truth. The truth is that meditation is a discipline that takes regular and committed practice and like any other discipline you practice regularly, the more you do it the more it will be there for you when you need it. In short, mindfulness meditation is training for the brain. And if you think it’s easy, try this. Try to sit quietly and think of nothing but your breath for 20 minutes and you'll soon realise that after a minute a distracting thought will enter your mind. Many of you listening to this or reading this will go to the gym regularly and you do so because you want to get fitter, lose weight or realise the benefits of physical activity for your mental health. But what’s the point of having a great body or being physically fitter if you don’t look after your mind. Will having certain 'certification' or 'accreditation' protect an organisation if they commission training and something goes wrong because the training doesn't meet the specific needs and risks of the organisation? This is a question that I have been asked many times and I know my good friend Trevel Henry has been asked this too because we regularly have conversations about this when an agency speaks to us about this very point. This podcast answers that question.…
Have you ever had the experience of having a problem, where you are caught up in thinking about all of the possible negative outcomes that could occur. Have you ever experienced the anxiety caused by the uncertainty of what could happen? If so, you have been the victim of your thinking. The fact is, it is just a bunch of thoughts. A mix of real time conscious thoughts underpinned by an unconscious programme that has developed in early childhood, through adolescence and adulthood until it has become a default mechanism for the way you perceive and understand your world. And these immaterial thoughts and programmes can have tremendous material consequences in your life. They can cause you to suffer from anxiety, make you depressed, make you angry and aggressive. They can compromise your immune system and make you physically and mentally ill. The truth is that your thoughts create what you experience so your life becomes a mirror of your internal processes. Recently I received news that a very lovely person I know suddenly died a week before Christmas, leaving his family completely devastated at the loss of a loving husband and father. I also know of someone who was rushed to hospital on Christmas Day with a suspected stroke and as a result of the pandemic we have all noticed an increase in the number of people now suffering with mental health problems, anxiety and uncertainty. These situations can cause people to feel isolated and alone, their grief, worry and anxiety making them feel separated from the rest of society. But we are not alone. We are all connected and sometimes it just takes a bit of contemplation and reflection to see that interconnectedness in a different perspective. The problem is that our society today is all about noise and distraction. People constantly need to be distracted from their life by watching the television, working long hours, engaging in excess and a variety of other external things that are easily available to distract them from themselves and the life they are living as a means of escapism. Sometimes however, we need to quiet the noise and turn down the static so we can listen to our mind and our bodies and connect with the world in a much more holistic and healthier way. Now I’ve covered the amazing benefits of meditation on previous podcasts and blog posts but this morning I was listening to a guided meditation episode on one of the apps I use called ‘10 percent happier’ and I’d like to share with you what I heard on that guided meditation in the hope that it will help give you a new perspective on the simple act of breathing and how extraordinary such a simple act can be. As you breathe just consider the reality of what you are doing. You are joining nearly 8 billion people and tens of billions of animals engaging in this same process around the world right now. In addition, there are also approximately 400,000 species of plants breathing with us. Exhaling the oxygen we breathe in and inhaling the carbon dioxide we breathe out. One life can sometimes seem so separate from everyone else’s and seem so lonely, and yet without this breath connected to all living things on this planet it would end very quickly. We’re never as lonely as it seems. Consider each breath you take contains more that one septillion molecules in it. That’s more than a billion, billion molecules. And because each breath diffuses around the world, it takes only about a year for each breath that every human is breathing to scatter all around the earth. As you are breathing right now, the odds are you’re breathing in five or six molecules of the last breath of Christ, of the breaths that the Buddha exhaled when experiencing enlightenment, of the breaths of every ancestor of yours and every living person, animal and plant that has ever lived on planet earth. Many people feel very separate, but we are actually all connected. The app is called 10 percent happier and it is available to download and is definitely worth a listen - https://www.tenpercent.com/…
In business today many people, including trainers, think that if they become more somber, stoic or serious that will give them a degree of gravitas so that they will be taken more seriously, which in turn means that it will help create a sense of superiority over others. In addition, in a drive to be politically expedient, it is sometimes seen that ‘having a laugh’ or being self-deprecating is, in some way, wrong and not the right way for a so-called ‘professional’ to behave. I disagree. If we stop and consider for a moment that one of the main purposes of training is to engage the learner so that they can be open to new experiences then and receptive to new ideas, we first need to make them feel comfortable. We are living in a world where society has prioritised independence to such an extent that many people are now left on their own to manage lives that are increasingly out of control. As young children, we were taught to be competitive, to be better, faster, stronger and more intelligent than our ‘competitors’ (others) if we were to ‘survive’ and thrive in our commerce-driven consumerist society. When we become adults we have to ‘compete’ for jobs, be the ‘best’ and have ‘aggressive’ sales strategies to meet sales targets etc., so the language of our society is embedded with a narrative of competitive and (at times) hostile words that have become the norm in our daily communications. But does being the ‘best’ or being more ‘successful’ than our neighbours make us happier? Does having more money, a bigger house and a fancy car make us happier? This podcast looks at the issues of independence compared to interdependence and the benefits of interdependent relationships with others.…
I often get asked this question – What is Mindfulness? So in this podcast I am going to answer that question for you, including covering some of the major benefits of mindfulness meditation.
Over two-thousand years ago the Greek philosopher Epictetus said that "People are not disturbed by things, but by the views they take of them". The Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius said that: “ A Man’s life is what his thoughts make of it". The Buddha stated: "We are shaped by our thoughts; we become what we think. When the mind is pure, joy follows like a shadow that never leaves". As you may know our body is made up of various organs, that are in turn made up of cells, that are in turn made up of atoms which, when looked at closely are 99.99999% empty space. In fact if you took all of this empty space out of every atom in your body what would be left in terms of physical state would be nothing bigger than a grain of sand. And if you took all of the empty space out of every atom in every human being on the planet (all 8 billion of us) which would be left would be nothing bigger than something the size of a tennis ball or apple. But this empty space is not actually empty. It is energy. 99.999999% of our physical state is made up of it.…
Those of you who know me will know that I am very interested in the way we operate as human beings, especially in the area of how our thoughts and feelings affect our physical and mental well-being. I have always had a desire to help people take more control of their lives and the reality they choose to experience as opposed to simply being a victim of circumstance and totally dependent on what happens to them. So this article is about you and how, if you don't control your emotional state, you become addicted to it and it's all based on scientific fact. As I recorded this podcast we are in the middle of a fuel situation in the UK which is resulting in a lot of people worrying about the future and looking back into their past to blame others for the situation that we find ourselves in at this present moment in time. By doing that they are not living in the present moment. In addition any hurt, frustration, anger, rage, jealousy or resentment they feel triggers a flood of approximately 1200 toxic chemicals into their own body, which isn't good for their health. Enjoy.…
A lot of people believe that to meditate you have to empty your mind but if you have ever tried to empty your mind during meditation you probably found that you can't do it? If that's you, then you are not alone. This is one of most common questions people have. The problem is that the concept of 'emptiness' has been misinterpreted and in the podcast I aim to try and explain that more clearly for you.…
I recently put out a blog post about the fact that I ran a session on meditation on our physical restraint instructor refresher courses, which was very well received. Since then I have had numerous emails, messages, texts and phone calls from people all asking me various questions about meditation, why I got started in it and what the benefits are. Therefore I thought I'd do this short podcast to answer some of those questions.…

Paul Keates is an individual who I have known for many years. In recent years Paul suffered brain damage that some medical professional believed meant that he would never walk again. He climbed Snowdon and started doing triathlons to prove them wrong raising thousands of pounds for various charities. Recently Paul caught covid, was induced twice into a coma and was on intensive care having to breathe through a tube in his throat. Then on top of all of that he recently lost his mum. His goal now is to to the three-peak challenge in 2022/3. What makes Paul unique is his ability to take action when others in the same situation resign to do nothing. Paul's story is an inspirational and motivational one and Paul has now decided to become a Life Coach so that he can help others in achieve more than what they believe they are possibly capable of. He will be one of the best Life Coaches in his field because he has lived it and is testimony to his own ability to help himself. Now he wants to help you. So if you are interested in being coached by Paul let him know. He is only looking for a few clients at the moment so act now to avoid disappointment.…
The problem for some people is that they live in a future based on bad things that have happened to them in the past that they can't let go of. It may have been something someone did to them or a wrong decision they made that caused them a lot of pain and suffering. As a result they never live in the moment choosing only to live in the past and focus on the very same thing that they wish had never happended so that their current life now would be better. But doing the same thing expecting a different result is the definition of insanity. Their judgement also becomes distorted because by focussing on a negative past event they become heavily focussed and polarised in their thinking which stops them being creative so they fail to find a positive solution by being able to think in a more constructive and positive way. As Albert Einstein once said "we cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them". This negativity also affects those close to them and the dichotomy is that although they love them they harm them by exposing them to their negative energy. Their pain and anger becomes an anchor that chains them to their past disabling their ability to move forward in life. The result, they live in the past because they choose to, which is like driving a car while only looking in the rear view mirror. The fact is we all make mistakes and bad decisions. It’s part of being human. The difference between living a happy, functional and productive life however is what you decide to do moving forward. Wasting more time on time you have already wasted is a pointless exercise. As a good Irish friend of mine says “There’s nothing new to be learned from a second kick of a donkey”. But when we look at the bigger picture and all that life has to offer us we can put things into perspective. Each new day is a gift. Use is well. Time is the only non-renewable thing we have. Don't waste it.…
Life or Death - The Placebo and Nocebo Effect The way you chose to think creates either a placebo or nocebo effect inside you. One improves your health and the other doesn't. Choose the way you wish to think
Where you are in life now is directly attributable to the decision and actions that you have taken in the past. We also all tend to look for information, wisdom and knowledge outside of ourselves, yet you have all of the knowledge, wisdom and information already inside of you. All you need to do is access it and the way you access it is through meditation. Do something productive every day. Taking productive action is key to your progression. Research now shows that it only takes sixty-seven days to produce a new habit. The key to doing that is to think and act as though what you are intending to happen has already happened. Your brain does not know the difference between perception and reality so it will respond based on whether you are actually doing it or just imagining it. Many people also do not follow their dreams. They feel that they are too big. But if you have had the capacity to dream the dream you have the capacity to make that dream a reality. You have the ability within you to live the life you desire.…
This is the true story of Dr Aidan MacCarthy who survived being a Japanese Prisoner of War, being torpedoed and marooned at sea, bombed at Nagasaki, recaptured and finally released. I hope it gives you hope.
Many people are struggling during this current situation and sometimes we may feel as though there is no point. We adopt a ‘what’s the point’ attitude. But there is a point and purpose in doing something constructive every day.
Today I helped a church deliver a service over zoom to it's congregation and I found the Minister's sermon very interesting. It was an open and honest talk about how he had at times lost his way and had days when he couldn't see any point in carrying on. The sermon also reminded me of a book I have read and regularly re-read. It's called 'Man's Search for Meaning'. It was written by Viktor Frankl and tells his story about being a longtime prisoner in the Nazi concentration camps, where his father, mother, brother and wife were all killed and where his existence was stripped naked to the point that he could be killed at any moment, for no reason whatsoever. This podcast reflects on that and also draws on the hope that can spring from finding meaning in our suffering. I hope it helps those of you who are finding things hard right now.…

1 Why Do I Spend a Lot Of Time Telling People What They Can Do As Opposed To What They Can’t Do? 8:57
In this podcast I answer the above question and to do so I have to take you back a number of years when I was on a speaking tour around the UK when someone raised their hand and told me that I shouldn’t be telling people what the can do. There are also other reasons too, which are consistent with my personal beliefs and values and I believe that if you live your life true to what you truly value then your life’s purpose becomes much easier, especially when it comes to making difficult decisions or when facing certain challenges. Now we hear a lot about the importance of mental health in the workplace and it is great to see this being talked about more openly, but if we don’t give people the right information and skills to enable them to deal with difficult and potentially violent situations and tell them what they can do as opposed to what they can’t do, how can we say we are looking after their mental health? I also value you and your family, some of whom may be placed at the risk of violence and aggression by the nature of the work you do and each and everyone of you has the right to come home safely each day. Anyway, I hope this podcast helps someone and if you have any comments or questions, please do leave them below and I’ll get back to you.…

1 Can Staff Refuse To Attend Training Even If The Organisation Has All Covid Safeguards in Place? 5:37
I received an email today that asked me the above question and having checked this out fully before answering it I (with the permission of the person who sent it to me) thought I'd share it with you in the hope that it may help some of you out there.
In this podcast I talk about what our life's purpose is and the difference between happiness and pleasure. For example, how many of us know someone who has everything but are unhappy. I also talk about conventional truth vs ultimate truth. The fact of the matter is we are all connected. Our actions affect every living organism out there. We are all part of one race - the human race. Have a great day.…

We all have an inner critic inside ourselves which (for some people) is mainly negative and destructive, but because the voice is inside our head we have the power and capacity to change it, to make it positive and constructive and if we do that we can begin to show self-compassion to ourselves, which can have amazing benefits. Have a great day.…
Occam’s razor, also called law of economy or law of parsimony, is a principle stated by the Scholastic philosopher William of Ockham (1285–1347/49) that “plurality should not be posited without necessity.” If we expect a member of staff to go into a potentially violent and aggressive situation with the aim of controlling and restraining another human being for the purpose of keeping everyone safe, where heart rates and emotions will be high, you have to give them simple skills. Otherwise we are failing them.…
In this podcast I talk about how our thoughts become things. How brain plasticity works and why this creates the behaviours we have and, more importantly, how you can change your life by changing the way you choose to think.

Someone kindly left a comment under my last Podcast entitled 'The Importance of Mind Training in Dealing With Conflict Situations' about the importance of visualisation which prompted me to do this one. The fact is we don't actually see with our eyes, we see with our mind. In short our everyday experience and our life is a projection of our memories (good or bad) and our anticipations (what we expect to happen), which is why so many people live in a 'bataris box' of expected reality. This podcast touches on the phenomenal scientific discoveries in the world of quantum physics and quantum mechanics that proves this very point. Enjoy and I'd appreciate your comments.…
I was listening to a guided meditation by Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh on 'Right thinking, right words and right actions' which became the motivation for this podcast on Monday morning because the teaching highlighted how we all become the sum of our own actions. Enjoy.
Resilience has been described as the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties, and we have all had our fair share of those during the last year. One of the great benefits of practicing mindfulness and awareness is that we become more flexible and more resilient. But meditation can also be useful in more dynamic ways. Meditation can help you do more than slow down your racing thoughts-it can help you think quicker. It can help you adapt to rapidly changing circumstances. It can be a key tool in promoting resilience. Without doubt, stress reduction improves resilience.…
As we enter our third national lockdown for the next six weeks many people will be worried, especially those of us who have businesses that we depend on and that worry will be compounded by the hourly news and media coverage that will focus primarily on the negatives of the lockdown and this current pandemic. Lots of staff go on conflict management and communication skills courses where they are taught skills and techniques on how to manage conflict being presented by another person. But what about staff? How do we expect a member of staff to control their behavior and not get triggered themselves? In short, how do we help staff respond appropriately as opposed to reacting without thinking? In addition, many staff will take the negative experience of a conflict situation away with them and they will replay it in their minds long after the event has ended. This is one reason why stress is on the increase in our society. This is what this Podcast is about.…
Handcuffs and Covid in 2021 - Physical restraint is a hazardous activity in it's own right, and now with the covid infection and death rates rising once again combined with the rising tide of violence against staff, I want to broach the subject of handcuffing and how handcuffs and other forms of mechanical restraint devices can help reduce the risk to all concerned in a restraint situation. Happy New Equanimity New Year to you all. Now I know social media will be awash with everyone wishing everyone else a Happy New Year for 2021 as we leave behind a year most of us would like to forget. But even as we move into 2021 we have the ongoing restrictions and fallout from this pandemic to deal with so I didn't want to glibly just wish everyone all the best. I wanted to offer you something that you can do for yourself, your family and even people you don't know. Now as you may know I meditate every day and during this lockdown period I've been doing quite a lot of more of that which has been really helpful. Meditation has many benefits. It can help you become more compassionate, promote loving kindness and practice sympathetic joy, but the near enemy of compassion is burnout, the near enemy of loving kindness is attachment and the near enemy of sympathetic joy can become simply comparing and none of these near-enemy's are good for you. One of the golden nuggets of meditation is ' Equanimity'. It's the secret sauce if you like. It helps us control what we can't control and not worry about what we can't control. This can be a major benefit in things like conflict resolution and resilience training (and this is something we will be adding to our conflict management & resilience training this coming year). This is about mental training (the inner game) and I hope that you take me up on my offer of checking out the app below and before anyone asks, no, I'm not an affiliate of the product. This is just one app that I've found to be very useful. And Here's the 10% Happier App link - https://10percenthappier.app.link/share…
This is a video interview I did with my good friend and professional colleague Tony Bleetman on the 18th November 2020. In this video Tony takes a look back at how far the UK has come in the last twenty or so years in relation to restraint and how far ahead the UK is compared to many other countries. We talk about the history of restraint, where it came from and how each different sector decided upon its own restraint training based on their own specific objectives and requirements. As well as lots of other interesting stuff!…
Interview With Trevel Henry on The 20th November 2020 As this is anti-bullying week Trevel and I discuss bullying from a few different perspectives. We talk about the psychological impact of bullying and the fact that ninety-eight percent of human beings can suffer a phobic reaction caused by interpersonal human conflict compared to only fifteen percent who would suffer a phobic reaction if confronted by a snake. We discuss school-refusal phobia, a little known phenomena caused by bullying at school. Trevel and I discuss the need for more openness and transparency, especially from men who tend to suffer in silence because they are supposed to be 'men'. Workplace Bullying We then look at the issue of workplace bullying, especially the subtle way that this can take place which can leave staff willing to put up with the pain and indignity of being verbally and physically abused as opposed to being disciplined by their management. School Bullying and Defending Oneself We talk about a situation where a bullied child had reached crisis point and defended himself only to be excluded by the school who knew about the bullying but wouldn't exclude the bullies due to the school full-inclusion policy. Which is bacially discrimination. Certification We discuss the reality that many staff face when training is decided on a 'certification' or 'accreditation' basis only, without any thought for the objectives that need to be met and how different agencies will have different sector operational and organisational objectives. we talk frankly about decisions being made about training by managers who use subjective opinion as opposed to an objective training needs analysis which can lead to techniques being omitted that should be used which leave everyone at risk. Underreporting We reflect on the fact that when we first stated there was a large problem in under-reporting because staff felt that there was no point in doing so because nothing would get done. And loads more ........…

This is a very simple saying and it of course applies to ladies and everyone else too - "If You Want To Be Rich, Do What The Rich Guy Does". So why don't more people do just that? Well one reason is that they don't invest in themselves so instead of investing in a course from someone who has already achieved what they want to achieve they go and find a cheaper course and this highlights that the person may also have a "fortress mentality" in so much as they want to be the best but only pay the cheapest price. 1 'Super-spreader' nurse at hospital training event where staff didn't wear masks or obey social distancing rules triggered Covid-19 outbreak 4:36
An article today reported that an infected nurse at a training event where staff didn't wear masks or obey social distancing rules triggered a Covid-19 outbreak at the Hillingdon Hospital in West London. It seems that a training session on June 30 was the source of the outbreak, and nurses who went did not all wear masks or stay socially distanced. Hospital bosses have apparently revealed that at least 70 staff were in self-isolation and 'a number' of them had tested positive for Covid-19. As a result the hospital started diverting ambulances to other hospitals on July 7. In another article posted on the HSE website entitled 'Consultant fined for providing incompetent health and safety advice' Luton Crown Court heard how a self-employed health and safety consultant provided inadequate and flawed advice. The article also said: "Where health and safety consultants are found to be in breach of legislation, HSE will hold persons to account for their failings". I know we are all keen to get back to training and some have agencies have been training all through covid, but this is a stark warning to all of us about the importance of social distancing, ppe, the importance of risk assessments and in having the right control measures in place.…
You will have probably seen the news item about the Metropolitan Police Commissioner Dame Cressida Dick apologising to the British sprinter Bianca Williams over the recent stop and search incident. As a result of the public interest in that case the Met is now undertaking a review of it's handcuffing protocols. Whilst acknowledging that handcuffing people should not be a ‘default’ action, Met Police Commissioner Cressida Dick, addressing the Home Affairs select committee this week, asserted “ I don’t believe I do run a police service in which handcuffing is routine", and this raises the point of this podcast about 'generalised' or 'restrictive' practices with regards to how the use of handcuffs (and also restraint) can be misused.…

1 An Employers Liability For Not Teaching The Full Range of Necessary Physical Skills Techniques 3:29
Where does an organisation stand if they take certain physical skills out of a physical restraint or defensive training programme (so that staff are no longer taught them) and then a member of staff gets injured during a restraint / assault at work that could have been prevented had the skill / or technique been left in? Could the company / training organisation be held liable for negligence under an act or omission for the injury sustained on the basis of the defendants claim that they were denied using a skill which, if applied correctly, in line with the training given and as part of a tactical hierarchy of response options, would have prevented the injury from being sustained?…

Recently a security officer who at the time working for a local authority on a subcontracted basis, intervened in an incident and possibly saved a man's life by restraining him and using handcuffs to control him. The police were called and took the man away and didn't have any issue with the fact he'd used handcuffs. A short while later a safeguarding officer for the local authority he was working for investigated the incident and said that they were reporting him to the SIA for professional misconduct as because he handcuffed the male, after the SIA allegedly told the council handcuffs were a breach of his licence. Then a police officer said that he wanted to see his license to carry handcuffs. I think you'll find this podcast interesting.…
I have just had a response to a Freedom of Information Request that I put into Social Work England about what training social services inspectors get on the use of force/physical restraint etc. As you can guess, they don't get any training at all. I'd be interested in your comments.
In this episode I look at the issue of Safeguarding under Regulation 13 of The Health and Social Care Act 2008 (Regulated Activities) Regulations 2014 and the possible implications of how leaving out certain techniques that leave vulnerable service users at risk may leave an organisation open to prosecution under the Sections 20 – 25 of the Criminal Justice and Courts Act 2015 and Health & Safety legislation. And if a death were to occur that could have been prevented by staff being given the right degree of training then there is the potential for prosecution for breach of Article 2(1) of the Human Rights Act 1998 and The Corporate Manslaughter and Corporate Homicide Act 2007. Enjoy!…

In this podcast I talk about the three levels of training needs that organisations need to consider when purchasing training. This is important for all training providers to understand so that you know what level to pitch your training at.
I was asked that very question today and it is a question I get asked regularly so here’s my answer.
This podcast follows on from yesterday’s podcast regarding the comments made in the independent review of pain-inducing techniques in YOI’s and STC’s and it answers the question - are pain-compliance techniques illegal?

Is There Any Indication From Anyone On If It Is Safe To Resume Restraint Training Yet?
This is about to launch so if you want to express your interest in the course check out our website at www.nfps.info
In this podcast I discuss some interesting happenings in less than five minutes (as promised).
Currently there are trainers, managers and inspectors in various industry sectors, including: healthcare, care, education, door supervision, security and close protection, who are either expected to train, manage, provide guidance on, investigate and even discipline staff who use physical force in the workplace. Yet a very high percentage of these people have not received any competent training or qualifications in that area. This makes them unqualified and not competent to do that. This leaves the employer, trainer or manager open to a legal challenge if a wrong assumption was made that led to a decision to discipline or terminate someone's employment or to charge them with a crime. That can end up with the employer facing an employment tribunal or being sued; because someone who has had their rights infringed has "an enforceable right to compensation" under the law. Worse still, incorrect information, advice, guidance and instruction can lead to an increased risk to staff and the population they serve and if that led to a serious injury or death then the employer and the manager/director responsible can be prosecuted under Health & Safety legislation and in the latter, under the Corporate Manslaughter and Corporate Homicide Act.…

This is a conversation between Trevel Henry and me on How Can You Run a Restraint Trainer Course in 5 Days, The Pareto Principle, Ockhams Razor, Academics and loads more!
This is an interview I did with Tony Bleetman. It follows on nicely from the one that I did with Eric Baskind the other day and adds a professional medical perspective on a lot of restraint related issues. Some of the main points are time stamped below: 00:23 - Inspectorate issues with the Youth Justice Board over certain physical restraint techniques (similar to the recent CQC issues raised with Eric Baskind); 01:45 - The basic principles of how to assist an organisation to understand what the challenges are in managing behaviour even before we get to the physical skills required; 03:26 - Providing the skills relevant to the needs of the organisation; 04:18 - The use of pain-compliance techniques and 'blanket-bans' on techniques not being helpful; 05:15 - Tony's introduction to the late great Peter Boatman and the challenge given and what it taught him; 07:29 - Tony's introduction to other industry sectors; 08:52 - The importance of working with the co-operation of staff and management to address the skills needed and how the system can evolve over time; 09:53 - Why having a rigid and inflexible set of physical skills don't work; 11:26 - The 'open book' approach to helping organisations get what they need; 13:42 - The economic benefits to the organisation in the cost savings and how we saved one organisation 1/2 a million pounds in six months and the other savings in terms of litigation etc; 15:34 - Why are some techniques being taught that shouldn't be taught?; 20:38 - A funny story about a 'shin-kick and a fire extinguisher'; 22:53 - The important point about staff being allowed to use reasonable force if and when presented with a situation they couldn't have planned for; 24:53 - Dealing with issues that hadn't be dealt with properly before such as, nasogastric feeding and ligature removal; 26:42 - The George Floyd case and the 'breathing talking fallacy' (as in the Jimmy Mubenga case) and some important facts on positional asphyxia; 32:58 - The three mechanisms of death from pressure to the neck; 34:29 - The belief that when door supervisors (for example) restrain someone on the floor they must hold the restrained person there until the police arrive.…

1 Eric Baskind and Myself Discussing The Legal Implications of a Care Quality Commission Freedom of Information Response 49:20
Under The Health & Social Care Act 2008 (Regulated Activities) Regulations 2014: Regulation 13: CQC inspectors are expected to safeguard people who use services from suffering any form of abuse or improper treatment which includes .... unlawful restraint. However the CQC's response to a freedom of information request has highlighted that CQC inspectors are very highly likely to be unqualified or competent to do so because they receive no training in that area. In effect, if CQC inspectors are not trained etc., how can they properly inspect? In the podcast we have covered the following plus much more: 02.01 - Overview of the CQC Report that gave rise to my FOI request 02:40 - The content of my FOI request to CQC 05:12 - CQC's email reply to my FOI request 07:38 - Health & Social Care Act 2008 (Regulated Activities) Regulations 2014: Regulation 13 08:26 Eric's response 19:32 - Who would be liable if an organisation were advised by a CQC inspector to use a training provider on the BILD Act list. Would it be CQC, BILD or the organisation? 20:40 - Examples of liability, the case of Mr Derek Lovegrove who dies during a restraint at Cedar Vale, post a recommendation by a Health Care Commission inspector that the organisation had to change training provider to one of the (then) BILD PI Traning provider list. 25:48 - The issue surrounding the lack of inclusion of pain-complaince, prone and face-down techniques and the BILD/RRN certification scheme. 28:25 - The problems of remaining certain techniques as 'emergency intervention' or 'emergency escape and rescue techniques' as opposed to calling a technique what is actually is. 35:18 - The problem with organisations allegedly not-recording certain techniques and staff not being allowed to record properly what has happened to meet the illustrate that they are reducing restraint, when in effect that are not. Is that fraud? 36:00 - Care providers main concerns are cost and compliance. So, if they are being actively signposted to the RRN standards by CQC many will possibly see that as a must have when this is not the case?…

Everyone who is anyone in CP knows ‘Ginge’, but if you don’t know him here is some info about Ginge. ‘Ginge’ served in the British Army for 18 years, 13 of which were spent in the 22nd Special Air Services Regiment. During this time, he developed a wide range of skills including counter-terrorism and VIP protection. Ginge joined the private sector in 1990 and has worked for a number of private security companies operating as an international security consultant. During his career Ginge has worked for Government officials, multinational companies and senior executives and has become recognised as one of the leading experts in the field of VIP protection and business security. Over the years Ginge has been responsible for the training of various close protection teams and operated exclusively as a security coordinator within high and low-level personal protection. During the past 10 years, Ginge has been involved in designing and delivering security awareness and personal safety/conflict management training for high network corporations and families living or travelling to high-risk regions worldwide. He has operated in virtually every hostile environment on earth. There is literally no-where that Ginge hasn’t operated in. At one time he was flying around to various parts of the world between five – fifteen times a month on executive protection duties, training assignments and going into environments that the police, national guard and local militia would advise not to or wouldn’t go into. This is how much in demand Ginge’s services where and are. During those times he has been confronted with many conflict situations which included a knife, and it was his training, knowledge, awareness and experience and skill that kept him and the people he was looking after safe. Ginge will be joining us on our October BTEC Level 3 Self-Defence Trainer Award Course, which you can find out more about here – https://www.nfps.info/self-defence-trainer-training-october-2020/ . This audio is taken from a recent video meeting where Trevel Henry and I discuss the burning question that seems to be on everyone’s lips at the moment, which is “Is There Any Guidance From Anywhere That Indicates When Can We Resume Physical Restraint Training During Covid 19?” Lots of trainers are now being asked to re-start delivering physical restraint/physical intervention/pmva/mva training and we are both being contacted daily (and sometimes more than once a day) to ask if we know of any guidance that has been issued by any agencies such as the SIA, NHS England, etc. This audio attempts to answer that question for you.…

1 Should My Staff Be Expected To Restrain Someone Under the Influence of Alcohol or Drugs in a Benefits Office if They Become Violent 30:03
In this video Trevel and I discuss some correspondence we've had from people we have subsequently helped and supported. In one case this involved a person whose company provides security staff to local authority benefits offices and the questions was asked: "Do you have anything official from the SIA or yourself that outlines How to deal with an Incident keeping Social Distancing? We work for the local council and I have staff in buildings where people attend for benefits etc. As I’m sure you are aware, they turn up under the influence of some form of substance and are not very cooperative. As a result, they have to be ejected from site." In another case someone works for a healthcare trust and has been told that pmva training has to be delivered because it is classified as "Business Essential". I hope you find this useful and as usual, we would welcome any comments below.…
My name is Mark Dawes and I have a message for every world leader, every leader of faith, all the media, and all of the great thinkers of our current modern age, so please bear with me on this one. We are living in unprecedented times right now. We've never been through anything like this before, but we will come out the other side. But while this is going on, there is a wave of negativity happening out there and it's taking people down a path of despair, anxiety, worry and fear. And that path can only lead one place. It's going to lead to a pit of deprivation and a pit of loss. Now I'm asking all the great thought leaders of our age, Bob Proctor, Joe Vitale, Tony Robbins, Dean Graziosi, and the rest of you out there. I want you to join forces with the world leaders on this planet and the leaders of faith and the media and everyone else out there, just like Napoleon Hill did in 1933 with Franklin D Roosevelt to get America out of the greatest depression that this world had ever seen. I believe that with your leadership, with your knowledge, with your expertise, we can actually build the greatest mastermind that this planet has ever seen. And the reason that is needed right now is if we don't change people's mindsets, if we don't have the world's greatest mastermind to change people's mindsets, to take them upstream, on a mission to be more positive, to have more hope, to actually use that three and a half pounds of infinite intelligence between their ears properly with a DEFINITIVNESS OF PURPOSE and with a PLAN OF ACTION, then the fallout from this pandemic is going to be far worse than the pandemic itself. It will take us into a global recession and depression. So I'm asking once again for all the world leaders to engage with all the leaders of faith, I want the media to get behind this and I want our great thought leaders, Bob Proctor, Joe Vitale, Tony Robbins, Dean Graziosi, and if I've missed anyone out, please forgive me, but I'm doing this live, so I'm just trying to remember everyone as I go along. I want you all to engage and get this MASTERMIND together because I want the press to stop focusing on the negatives of this. We need hope. We need inspiration. We need leadership like never before. And if we all get behind a common cause to fight a common enemy, and that enemy being negativity, I believe we can change things for the better and come out of this far better people than what we will do if this doesn't happen. So please, please someone lead this. Someone make this happen. Thank you. Mark Dawes…

These are the words of Viktor Frankl and it is a question he used to ask his patients who came to se him who were suffering from a multitude of torment and from their answers he would find their reason for living And Viktor Frankl was well qualified to ask that question as a therapist because he had survived the holocaust as a long term prisoner in Nazi concentration camps where his existence as a human being was stripped bare and where he also lost his father, mother, brother and wife to the camps or the gas chambers. He believed that our ultimate human freedom was the ability to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances. As you know I have been putting out risk assessment information relating to Covid 19 and Physical Restraint in lieu of anything that may or may not be forthcoming from Public Health England and you can access that resource on our website if you haven’t done so already. However, I am also seeing another worrying trend, and that is risk assessments being done to justify something that staff shouldn’t be doing, and that is not the purpose of a risk assessment. Our brains are designed to protect us from things that can harm us, so they are designed to seek out what threatens our safety and make us aware of that threat. And let’s face it, there is an abundance of things for our brain to choose from that will create fear, anxiety, worry and anger, because it is readily available all around us. And Anger and fear are the two primary emotions that can destroy your life. They can destroy your business, your relationships with others and also your health. But there are also so many positive things available to us if we only took the time to look for them. Things we can be grateful for and that make us happy. It just takes a bit of training to learn how to focus on what you want as opposed to what you don’t want. Don’t be a victim of your own outdated brain!…

Now this only just started to happen, but what this service user does is he leaves the home and goes to a bridge and threatens to jump off the bridge into fast moving traffic. This podcast is about vicarious liability and how it can affect you as a trainer, a training company and a organisations who may be commissioning training from a trainer or training company. For example, who would be liable if an organisation commission an outside agency to deliver physical restraint training and the trainer (who the staff had no option but to go to) injured a member of staff on a course? Would it be just the trainer who is liable, or the training company or would the organisation who commissioned the training be liable? Also, who would be liable if a company had a ‘no restraint’ policy and staff were instructed not to intervene to protect a patient or service user who was smashing their head against a wall? And what about staff safety. Who is liable if staff are told that they cannot defend themselves if they are likely to be assaulted at work? Would it be the person who gave the instruction or the company who employed the person who gave the instruction, even if the company wasn’t aware that such an instruction had been given?…

The short answer is that the company would be vicariously liable, which for means that the person bringing the equipment in, is not just acting dishonestly, but also (in my humble opinion) acting negligently and potentially fraudulently. It is also a betrayal of trust and a conflict of interest and it could potentially lead to someone being injured, that would highly likely not have happened if they had used the equipment that was fit for purpose. 1 Strategic Blindness, Situational Awareness, Dr Hadiza Bawa-Garba and Physical Skills Training 13:55
Yesterday I did a podcast entitled 'Complicating the Uncomplicated' and today I want to follow on from that with this podcast entitled 'Strategic Blindness, Situational Awareness, Dr Hadiza Bawa-Garba and Physical Skills Training', because it adds more weight to the argument that teaching physical skills in a complex manner only adds to the cognitive workload of the learner, increases the margin for error to occur which in turn increases the risk of injury, serious assault and even death. In this episode, I'm also going to draw on the findings in the recent court appeal case of Dr Hadiza Bawa-Garba, as there are some interesting insights in this case that highlight the failings of a system as opposed to the failings of the individual.…
Today in many physical restraint/physical intervention and disengagement/breakaway systems, many techniques are taught in way that seems designed to 'complicate the uncomplicated'. And what I mean by that is a system of teaching is employed that breaks the technique down into each component part which is then taught within a complex system of instruction making it hard for the learner to learn, remember and recall the techniques when needed, especially when put under pressure. This increases the margin for error and thus the risk of someone being hurt, seriously injured, or even killed. So, my question is, why do organisations use training providers that use these systems to deliver a system of techniques that are highly probably designed to fail, to their staff?…
