Jerry’s academic journey led him to earn a doctorate in Education Administration from Virginia Tech, laying the foundation for his impactful career. Renowned as an accomplished author, teacher, and martial artist, Jerry’s contributions have left an indelible mark on the martial arts community.

Black Belt Magazine has aptly dubbed him “America’s foremost martial arts educator,” while Kick Illustrated recognizes him as “The published Authority on American Karate.” Such accolades speak volumes about Jerry’s expertise and influence in the martial arts realm.

In 1974, Jerry embarked on a teaching venture at Radford University, where he introduced karate and self-defense. His dedication to martial arts education led him to institute a martial arts minor at Radford, a program he passionately nurtured until his retirement in 2021.

One of Jerry’s most notable achievements came in 1983 when he co-founded A.I.K.I.A (American Independent Karate/Kickboxing Instructors Association) alongside the legendary Joe Lewis. Adding to the association’s prestige, Bill “Superfoot” Wallace joined as a co-national director in 1988. This collaborative effort showcased Jerry’s commitment to fostering excellence and unity within the martial arts community.
