In this episode Anna and I address the following Myths and Mistakes: Myth: NDIS don't fund Core supports for children because it is parental responsibility. Myth: You need a diagonsis to get access to NDIA after the age of 7. Myth: The NDIS don't fund sensory items. Mistake: Asking NDIS to fund supports that it literally cannot fund. Mistake: Expecting NDIS to fund everything because you child has a diagnosis. Mistake: Thinking that homeschooling your child means more support via NDIS. Myth: Kids don't get funding for support coordination. Myth and Mistake: You plan manager will make sure you don't run out of funds. Myth: Providers should charge the prices from the NDIS price guide. Myth: Children should be funded for and attend intensive therapies and interventions while they're young. Anna is a passionate advocate and self confessed NDIS Nerd on a mission to empower parents and caregivers to engage with the NDIS with confidence and clarity. Anna is the founder of Common Ground Disability Consulting which supports NDIS Participants aged 0-14 years to understand and uphold their rights through an empathetic and holistic family approach. She is also the mum of a child living with complex disabilities. Anna provides one to one education and peer support to help Participants and carers access the NDIS, maximise outcomes from their NDIS plan and navigate the appeals process. Christina Schmidt (she/her/hers) is an AuDHD, multiply-dialectal, and multicultural Black woman. She lives, works, plays, and creates on the unceded lands of Wurundjeri Country in Naarm (Melbourne, Victoria, Australia). Born in the US, Christina has spent the majority of her adult life overseas in Austria and now Australia. She works with paediatric and adult clients, specialising in about neuroaffirming practice, augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), gestalt language processing, and a bit of orofacial myofunctional therapy and feeding support. Social justice advocacy is deeply intertwined in her work due to her strong justice sensitivity. Christina is deeply passionate about helping people discover and embrace their unique strengths, sharing them with the world in the ways and at the times they feel ready. This episode comes with a trigger warning for discussion of sexual assault and victimisation. This was another uplanned episode, brought about by a recent discussion I had. I was reminded of a horrifying ststistic. That 9 in 10 autistic woman have experienced sexual abuse, domestic abuse or rape in their life. Autistic people are often ‘monotropic’. Monotropic minds tend to have their attention pulled more strongly towards a smaller number of interests at any given time, leaving fewer resources for other processes. It seems not only autistic people may experience monotropism and it may be more widly experienced by neurodivergent people, such as ADHDers.
