In this episode of the Alpha Human Podcast, Lawrence Rosenberg interviews Master Sergeant Darrell Utt, a retired Green Beret with a storied 26-year military career. Darrell shares insights from his book, "Grit to Glory: A Green Beret’s Journey from West Virginia to Baghdad," which chronicles his path from humble beginnings to leading an elite Special Forces team in high-stakes combat. During the discussion, Darrell reflects on overcoming the obstacles of not embodying the Special Forces archetype and conquering imposter syndrome, as he didn’t fit the traditional mold of a Green Beret. Drawing from his austere and hard-scrabble upbringing in West Virginia, he credits his parents and early mentors for instilling in him the toughness and adaptability that became cornerstones of his success, enabling him to rise and transform himself into an elite warrior ... proving that true excellence transcends conventional frameworks and stereotypes. Darrell recounts how his unconventional path to becoming a Green Beret was shaped by childhood struggles, mentorship from figures like his high school football coach (a former Green Beret) and his relentless work ethic. Despite not fitting the stereotypical image of a Special Forces warrior, Darrell recounts how through sheer grit and mental toughness (inspired by lessons from his humble and hard-scrabble upbringing) he rose through the ranks to lead his own team of Green Berets into urban combat in Baghdad, Iraq. The conversation also delves into Darrell’s philosophy on leadership, innovation, and adaptability - his "Grit Code" ... principles for overcoming challenges and pursuing excellence, including "Courage is Contagious," "Calm Breeds Calm," "Control What You Can Control" and "Eradicate Arrogance," among other maxims for success. He also discusses the importance of "Embracing Innovation," especially in high-stakes, high-risk environments, and how he encouraged his team to think unconventionally to achieve victory on the battlefield. As he transitions to civilian life, Darrell also opens up about the challenges of recalibrating after being addicted to the adrenaline, high stakes, and raw survival instinct of combat ... a place where he thrived in chaos, transcended fear, and felt invincible, courageous, and free. Darrell’s journey serves as a testament to the power of perseverance, responsibility, and embracing challenges head-on. His “Grit Code,” developed through years of extraordinary experiences, offers universal lessons for anyone striving to achieve greatness. As one of the first British Army Special Forces soldiers to pass the Special Boat Service (SBS) selection process (a path traditionally reserved for Royal Marines), Dean’s story is a testament to determination, persistence, and an unrelenting pursuit of excellence. Throughout the conversation, we delve into the mindset, traits, and qualities that have defined Dean’s remarkable journey ... from his time in Special Forces to his transition into the high-stakes world of private security, where he earned renown for his expertise in executing complex evacuations in countries facing civil war, military coups, and societal collapse ... including single-handedly orchestrating the evacuation of the Canadian embassy during the Libyan crisis and aiding in the extraction of over 1,000 individuals during the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan. Eipper spent 16 years as a member of the Wichita Falls, Texas SWAT team, gaining extensive experience as a SWAT sniper and serving as the head of the department’s Gang Task Force Unit. Throughout the conversation, Sgt. Eipper delves into the qualities and traits essential for excelling in the complex and demanding role of a sniper in law enforcement, as well as the profound psychological challenges that can arise following deadly encounters, offering a glimpse into the mental and emotional landscape that police and soldiers must navigate when using lethal force. Sgt. Eipper also shares his insights on the intersection of faith and duty as outlined in his book, "Jesus Christ on Killing," and explores the scriptural interpretations of taking a life, examining various biblical passages to understand what the bible articulates about the morality and ethics of killing, and how scripture provides a framework for understanding the morality and legality of lethal force, emphasizing the conditions under which such actions are considered permissible by God. This discussion reflects on the biblical narratives and commandments that discuss the sanctity of innocent lives while also acknowledging the realities of justice and protection that sometimes necessitate and justify taking a life under certain circumstances, such as self-defense, war, and capital punishment. Additionally, Sgt. Eipper addresses the fundamental misunderstanding of Christ's role as the Lamb of God and His commandment to "turn the other cheek," challenging the belief that Jesus is a pacifist. Feldman methodically deconstructs the myths that carbohydrates are non-essential and that our ancestors had limited access to them, presenting evidence that ancient diets were likely rich in carbohydrates, which are crucial for optimal metabolic health and energy production. Feldman also tackles the misconceptions about sugar and fructose, providing a nuanced explanation of their metabolic effects and disputing the common belief that sugars are inherently harmful. He emphasizes the body's ability to utilize carbohydrates efficiently, arguing against the notion that high carbohydrate intake inevitably leads to insulin resistance or metabolic disorders. Additionally, the conversation explores the metabolic implications of low-carb and ketogenic diets, underscoring the bioenergetic view that carbohydrates are the body's preferred energy source. In this episode of The Alpha Human Podcast, Lawrence talks with renowned fitness expert Clark Bartram about his personal journey with prostate cancer. Clark's approach to the disease is unconventional, focusing on alternative treatments instead of traditional methods like surgery or radiation, with a battle plan that centers on four key objectives: slow the cancer, stop the cancer, destroy the cancer, and heal the root cause behind the cancer's occurrence. Clark also shares his perspective on testosterone deprivation therapy, commonly used in prostate cancer treatment and emphasizes the importance of not letting your anxiety dictate your treatment path. He encourages those facing a similar diagnosis to take time to research, understand their condition, and make informed decisions rather than rushing into treatments out of fear. Clark's story is a powerful reminder of the importance of self-advocacy and personalized care in the face of health challenges, and his experience offers valuable insights and inspiration for those facing prostate cancer. In this episode of The Alpha Human Podcast, Lawrence Rosenberg talks with Morley Robbins, founder of the Root Cause Protocol, on iron overload and its connection to cancer. Robbins delves into the history and misconceptions surrounding iron and its perceived deficiency in human health leading to a societal fixation on iron supplementation. Robbins challenges this narrative, highlighting the abundance of iron in the environment and the human body's natural ability to regulate iron through copper. Robbins asserts that many health issues, including cancer, are due to a lack of bioavailable copper and an excess of unregulated iron. He describes how the body's metabolism, particularly in cancer cells, shifts from using oxygen (oxidative phosphorylation) to fermenting sugar (glycolysis) due to a copper deficiency. This shift, known as the Warburg Effect, indicates a lack of bioavailable copper necessary for iron regulation and oxygen metabolism. The conversation also touches on the role of liver impairment and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, which Robbins attributes to an imbalance of copper, retinol, and iron. He emphasizes the importance of retinol (animal-based vitamin A) in maintaining copper balance and its critical role in overall health. Robbins challenges conventional wisdom on supplements like vitamin D and ascorbic acid, arguing that they can impede the body's natural mineral balance. https://therootcauseprotocol.com/ "Copper deficiency will favor glycolysis and cell proliferation": Role of Copper on Mitochondrial Function and Metabolism https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fmolb.2021.711227/full The Disturbed Iron Phenotype of Tumor Cells and Macrophages in Renal Cell Carcinoma Influences Tumor Growth https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7139531/ Altered Iron Metabolism and Impact in Cancer Biology, Metastasis, and Immunology https://www.frontiersin.org/journals/oncology/articles/10.3389/fonc.2020.00476/full Copper deficiency increases iron absorption in the rat https://journals.physiology.org/doi/full/10.1152/ajpgi.00509.2002 Association between blood copper and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease according to sex https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0261561420304982…

1:46:22In this episode of The Alpha Human Podcast, Lawrence Rosenberg shares his experience with chromophobe kidney cancer and how taking control of his healing journey transformed his mindset, fostering hope and positivity. He delves into the concept of locus of control, discussing its psychological significance in recovery. He also explores studies demonstrating the mind-body connection's potential impact on healing via enhanced immune function, and the modulation of neurotransmitters, neuropeptides, hormones, and gene expression via epigenetics. Lawrence also delves into the relationship between the mind's healing capabilities, emphasizing intention and visualization. He references two influential books: David Hamilton's "How Your Mind Can Heal Your Body" and Gerald Epstein's "Healing Visualizations: Creating Health Through Imagery." Hamilton discusses the critical role of visualization in the healing process and the significance of having a clear intent to guide imagination effectively. Epstein also emphasizes the importance of intention and how directing your will inward, allows for the conscious mastery of health. Lawrence goes further and adds that, when our intention and will is empowered by Jesus Christ, then anything becomes possible. To that end, Lawrence explores Annette Capps' book "Quantum Faith," which draws parallels between quantum physics and Jesus Christ's teachings on faith and the spoken word. Lawrence illustrates how observation or intention can fundamentally alter the behavior of subatomic particles, emphasizing that reality may only manifest when observed or intended. This leads to a discussion of the power of intention and faith, referencing Bible verses underlining the impact of words and beliefs on reality. Lawrence also discusses Kenneth Hagin's book, "Words," which underscores the significance of not only having faith but also professing and speaking one's beliefs and describes his daily routine of communion with Christ, visualizing healing through His light, energy, and spirit. He discusses the transformative impact of faith and the desire to honor and glorify Jesus Christ with his words and actions. In this episode of the Alpha Human Podcast, Lawrence examines various interventional studies on the effects of dairy consumption on cancer progression and shares evidence suggesting that bovine milk, particularly its casein content, can lead to the metastasis of cancer. With that said, milk proteins have also been shown to possess anti-cancer properties as well and here we navigate this nuanced landscape, presenting both sides of the argument. Intriguingly, and beyond the milk protein debate, Lawrence raises a far larger concern with respect to dairy and cancer, an issue starker than the conjecture surrounding casein protein, and that is the problems related to extracellular vesicles (EVs) derived from milk—a concern that could reshape the way we think about dairy consumption for individuals dealing with cancer. The podcast explores a study that yielded unexpected results—while milk-derived EVs induced cellular senescence in cancer cells, reducing primary tumor size, they paradoxically accelerated cancer metastasis. This finding serves as a pivotal warning to those with cancer who might consider consuming dairy. Lawrence's analysis of this critical revelation underscores the importance of carefully evaluating dietary choices, especially for individuals navigating cancer, and making informed decisions based on the available evidence. In this episode of the Alpha Human Podcast, Lawrence Rosenberg discusses the potential link between the consumption of peanuts and cancer metastasis. Peanuts contain peanut agglutinin (PNA), a lectin that binds to a complex sugar known as the T-antigen, a glycan bound to proteins found on certain cancer cells. This interaction mimics the actions of galectin-3, an endogenously produced human lectin (often overexpressed in cancer patients) that can bind to dysregulated glycoproteins on the membranes of cancer cells leading to enhanced cellular adhesion, invasion, migration, metastasis, angiogenesis, and immune evasion. Additionally, PNA has been shown to interact with endothelial cells and trigger the secretion of metastasis-promoting cytokines that can lead to increased adhesion between tumor cells and blood vessel walls, facilitating tumor cell metastasis. Lawrence also highlights modified citrus pectin (mCP), a natural compound that has been found to block galectin-3 activity and inhibit tumor growth. Additionally, mCP has shown promising results targeting multiple critical rate-limiting steps involved in cancer metastasis due to its anti-adhesive, apoptosis-promoting, and apoptosis-inducing properties. In this episode of The Alpha Human Podcast, Lawrence delves into drugs that can induce Ferroptosis, a form of cell death characterized by the accumulation of lipid peroxides and iron-dependent reactive oxygen species, as this might be an Achilles' heel for cancers that exhibit iron overload. Although there are currently no approved drugs designed for this purpose, there are a number of existing pharmaceuticals that have demonstrated the ability to trigger ferroptosis in cancer cells. For instance, Lawrence highlights Auranofin, a rheumatoid arthritis drug, and Metformin, a widely prescribed drug for diabetes that have both demonstrated the ability to induce ferroptotic death in cancer cells. Additionally, Lawrence discusses the effectiveness of Artesunate, a derivative of artemisinin commonly prescribed as an anti-malarial drug, and Sulfasalazine, primarily used for treating inflammatory bowel diseases like ulcerative colitis, as both have shown the capability to trigger ferroptosis as well. In this episode of the Alpha Human Podcast, Lawrence Rosenberg dives into the fascinating connection between iron overload and cancer. Iron is an essential micronutrient that plays a crucial role in various biological processes, including energy production, DNA synthesis, and immune system function. However, excess iron is also toxic and iron accumulation is typically seen in renal cell carcinoma (as well as other cancers), and increased iron metabolism is associated with the malignant transformation of cells, cancer progression, drug resistance, and immune evasion. In fact, individuals working in iron and steel occupations have a higher risk of developing kidney cancer. With that said, Lawrence also introduces a recently discovered form of programmed cell death called ferroptosis, which is induced by elevated intracellular iron levels and subsequent depletion of the antioxidant glutathione. Ferroptosis represents a natural mechanism to eliminate cancer cells, as well as those cells deficient in key nutrients or damaged by infection or ambient stress. While ferroptosis is beneficial in removing problematic cells, it should also be noted that dysregulation or excessive activation can contribute to disease pathogenesis, including neurodegenerative disorders. Interestingly, Lawrence highlights the unique characteristic of chromophobe renal cancer cells in having strikingly elevated levels of glutathione, which acts as a reactive oxygen species scavenger that protects these cells from ferroptosis. And although this metabolic dependency on glutathione enables chromophobe renal cell carcinoma (as well as a number of other cancers) to survive despite iron overload and oxidative stress, it may also turn out to be cancer's Achilles heal. 1:44:09In this thought-provoking episode of the Alpha Human Podcast, Lawrence presents compelling insights from the medical and scientific literature that challenge the traditional theory of cancer as a disease driven by genetic mutations, introducing evidence that underwrites alternative explanations for how cancer develops. The episode also explores the causes of Chromophobe Renal Cell Carcinoma (ChRCC), the type of cancer Lawrence has been living with for the past seven years, delving into the influence of mitochondrial dysfunction, compensatory metabolic pathways, and cell-to-cell cannibalism. Lawrence discusses significant findings from the scientific literature that could have a profound impact on ChRCC. While two of these findings were detailed in the previous episode and are particular to his case, the third explores insights from Thomas Seyfried, a renowned professor of biochemistry and genetics at Boston College that has implications for managing a broad spectrum of cancers. Lawrence also continues to share his personal journey and the importance of understanding the causes of ChRCC and cancer in general, introducing alternative hypotheses that challenge the widely accepted somatic mutation theory (SMT) of cancer. Lawrence discusses the tissue organization field theory (TOFT) as a substitute explanation for the development and progression of cancer and also explores Otto Warburg's theory of cancer as a mitochondrial metabolic disease. Lawrence cites research that supports ChRCC as a case study in line with Warburg's hypothesis, highlighting the role of mitochondrial dysfunction and the impact it has on epigenetic signaling. Furthermore, Lawrence discusses the compensatory mechanisms employed by cancer cells to survive under adverse conditions, and how Thomas Seyfried's press-pulse strategy for managing cancer exploits this adaptive response, a method that may be a powerful alternative for dealing with cancer in a nontoxic manner, and the implications it has on the unexpected way ChRCC (and a few other cancers) obtain nutrients - which may present its own unique Achille's heal (or two). 1:17:20In the latest episode of the Alpha Human Podcast, Lawrence shares his experience of delving into the medical literature for six months after being told that other than surgery, there were no effective treatments for his type of cancer. The results of his genetic analysis showed that his tumor had a mutation of the DDX41 gene, responsible for creating a protein that suppresses certain oncogenes, such as KIT. What's more, he discovered that his tumor not only expressed higher levels of the kinase receptor protein C-KIT compared to normal cells, but he also learned has a KIT mutation. This is noteworthy because KIT activating mutations are typically never seen in chromophobe renal cell carcinoma (ChRCC), which is Lawrence's cancer type. This finding could have significant implications for targeted therapies, such as Tyrosine Kinase Inhibitors, which although usually ineffective in chRCC, may work in Lawrence's case due to his unique mutation profile. The episode also highlights a scientific paper from 2019 that reported on a patient with metastatic ChRCC who had an exceptional response to Sunitinib, despite tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) not being typically effective for this type of cancer. The patient had increased expression of VEGF-C and VEGF-B, which could be utilized as biomarkers to guide ChRCC patients toward TKI therapy. Lawrence stresses the importance of doing your own research and taking control of your health, especially when dealing with serious medical conditions. In this episode of the Alpha Human Podcast, Lawrence Rosenberg and Michael Walsh discuss how war and the existential battle of ideas and civilizations have been the crucial factor in the advancement of human potential and why, given its inextricable link to our progress as a species, modern society is bent on muting, if not blotting out, man's primal nature. Michael is also the author of "We Fight Monsters: Wisdom And Inspiration That Speak To The Warrior's Soul." In this episode of The Alpha Human Podcast, Lawrence Rosenberg and Michael Kurcina discuss his journey as the son of a brilliant engineer who worked with the CIA during the Vietnam War and a Vietnamese woman from a small village who left the country before the fall of Saigon to grow up in San Jose immersed in books and fighting as a kid searching for meaning. As Michael grew into a young man, he became a warrior looking for a war, fueled by violence and an intense need to test his mettle, brawling in bars and on a path to prison, he would eventually rise from being broke and jobless to reenlisting in the military at age 39, two decades after an injury ended his career with the Marines. We delve deep into Michael's book "We Fight Monsters" a journey into his musings on what it means to be a man and face death, fear, love, war, as well as how to be free, how to dare, and how to be reborn, as seen through the eyes of his journey of self-discovery. Along the way we discuss Michael's views on why cultural elites and "intellectual doubters" seem to be bent on destroying what it means to be a man, fomenting a self-hating, weak society - why men aspire to be Gods and are often plagued by anger, and how we can use the "seeds of pain" born of the trauma wrought by violence, grief and hate to build a positive and rewarding life. We also explore the genesis of Michael's vision for Spotter Up as a source of knowledge for those who much like himself are part Man of Action, Man of Intellect, Man of Emotion, and Man of Spirit (gunfighter, writer, warrior, and monk), and who through dedication to the Whole Man Concept of Paideia and Michael's Chessman ideal, can find their way to the top of the mountain that we all envision conquering. 1:38:12Jen Satterly spent a decade as a filmmaker and photographer, 3 years of which saw her embedded with the Navy SEALS and U.S. Army Special Forces where she filmed highly realistic training missions. During this time, Jen witnessed a serious lack of resources to aid the struggles that many special operators faced with respect to Post Traumatic Stress. While working to capture the intense environments created to simulate real SpecOps missions, Jen met and married Tom Satterly, a retired Delta Force Command Sgt. Major and become a Certified Health Coach in her determination to help Tom in his battle with PTS and TBI. In doing so she found her passion for helping other Special Operators and their families with similar challenges, and together Jen and Tom founded the All Secure Foundation, to help Special Operations Combat Warriors and their families heal from the invisible wounds of war. Jen is also the author of the book, "Arsenal of Hope: Tactics for Taking on PTSD Together." In this episode of The Alpha Human Podcast, we welcome Jen back to the show to discuss her new book and her battle to help veterans suffering from the effects of PTSD and TBI. Jen and Lawrence Rosenberg explore the harrowing plight of combat vets who along with their families suffer from the unseen scars of war, as well as the shocking statistics surrounding veteran suicide with over 45,000 dead soldiers in the last 6 years alone. We also discuss Jen's own battle with PTSD. As a child, Jen was bullied mercilessly in school, and along the way, although she retreated from the world for many years in her early youth, she grew up seeking to help take care of the wounded souls in her life. We also talk about Jen's rise in the world of advertising, and her role as an entrepreneur in starting her own ad agency and film studio where she won a contract to embed with Special Operations units, filming large-scale and dangerous Realistic Military Training exercises. During the course of filming RMTs, Jen witnessed first hand the effects of PTSD on the soldiers and veterans she worked with including the issues faced by the love of her life Retired Sgt. Major Tom Satterly who she met while working with the Special Operations Community. We discuss the challenges Jen and Tom have fought hard to conquer, from Complex PTSD, TBI, and Suicidal Ideation to Jen's Secondary Post Complex PTSD and how they have held on and made it through against the odds. We also explore Jen's new book Arsenal of Hope, a tough and honest account of the struggles she encountered and the lessons learned in her fight to heal Tom, as well as many others within the Special Operations community that count on her and her foundation, All Secure, for insight, advice, and a willingness to listen and understand the psychological struggles that plague so many of our country's toughest warriors. We also delve into the anger that plagues so many combat vets and their families, as well as the roots of PTS including concepts such as moral injury and survivor's guilt, along with the techniques that Jen and Tom have used both in their own lives, as well as for many in the Special Operations community, to help ameliorate the anguish and suffering experienced from the mental wounds left untreated. This includes the crucial element of nutrition in the healing process, the cathartic nature of sharing your story and experiences, as well as why acknowledging and even naming the different personalities that manifest when PTSD is triggered are powerful tools that assist many in their battle to lead a healthy and productive life. - Links: https://allsecurefoundation.org/ Purchase Arsenal of Hope: Tactics for Taking on PTSD, Together from the All Secure Foundation 100% of proceeds directly supports all secure foundation warriors and warrior families: https://bit.ly/3dhumv4 https://www.facebook.com/AllSecureFoundation/…
