A Psalm

Psalm 55

Exaudi, Deus

Hear my prayer, O God; do not hide yourself from my petition.

Listen to me and answer me; I have no peace, because of my cares.

I am shaken by the noise of the enemy and by the pressure of the wicked;

For they have cast an evil spell upon me and are set against me in fury.

My heart quakes within me, and the terrors of death have fallen upon me.

Fear and trembling have come over me, and horror overwhelms me.

And I said, “Oh, that I had wings like a dove! I would fly away and be at rest.

I would flee to a far-off place and make my lodging in the wilderness.

I would hasten to escape from the stormy wind and tempest.”

Swallow them up, O Lord; confound their speech; for I have seen violence and strife in the city.

Day and night the watchmen make their rounds upon her walls, but trouble and misery are in the midst of her.

There is corruption at her heart; her streets are never free of oppression and deceit.

For had it been an adversary who taunted me, then I could have borne it; or had it been an enemy who vaunted himself against me, then I could have hidden from him.

But it was you, a man after my own heart, my companion, my own familiar friend.

We took sweet counsel together, and walked with the throng in the house of God.

Let death come upon them suddenly; let them go down alive into the grave; for wickedness is in their dwellings, in their very midst.

But I will call upon God, and the Lord will deliver me.

Galatians 2:6-10

And from those who seemed to be influential (what they were makes no difference to me; God shows no partiality)—those, I say, who seemed influential added nothing to me. On the contrary, when they saw that I had been entrusted with the gospel to the uncircumcised, just as Peter had been entrusted with the gospel to the circumcised (for he who worked through Peter for his apostolic ministry to the circumcised worked also through me for mine to the Gentiles), and when James and Cephas and John, who seemed to be pillars, perceived the grace that was given to me, they gave the right hand of fellowship to Barnabas and me, that we should go to the Gentiles and they to the circumcised. Only, they asked us to remember the poor, the very thing I was eager to do.

Mark 5:22-24

Then came one of the rulers of the synagogue, Jairus by name, and seeing him, he fell at his feet and implored him earnestly, saying, “My little daughter is at the point of death. Come and lay your hands on her, so that she may be made well and live.” And he went with him.

And a great crowd followed him and thronged about him.

Mark 5:35-6:1

While he was still speaking, there came from the ruler's house some who said, “Your daughter is dead. Why trouble the Teacher any further?” But overhearing what they said, Jesus said to the ruler of the synagogue, “Do not fear, only believe.” And he allowed no one to follow him except Peter and James and John the brother of James. They came to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and Jesus saw a commotion, people weeping and wailing loudly. And when he had entered, he said to them, “Why are you making a commotion and weeping? The child is not dead but sleeping.” And they laughed at him. But he put them all outside and took the child's father and mother and those who were with him and went in where the child was. Taking her by the hand he said to her, “Talitha cumi,” which means, “Little girl, I say to you, arise.” And immediately the girl got up and began walking (for she was twelve years of age), and they were immediately overcome with amazement. And he strictly charged them that no one should know this, and told them to give her something to eat.

He went away from there and came to his hometown, and his disciples followed him.

The Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth;

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Examen

In God's presence, think through the day ahead:

the work you will do, the people you will encounter,

the dangers or uncertainties you face,

the possibilities for joy and acts of kindness,

any particular resolutions you need to renew,

consider what might draw you from the love of God and neighbor,

the opportunities you will have to know and serve God and to grow in virtue,

remember those closest to you and all for whom you have agreed to pray,

ask God's blessings, guidance, and strength in all that lies before you.

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Collects of the Day

Almighty God, you have given your only Son to be for us a sacrifice for sin, and also an example of godly life: Give us grace to receive thankfully the fruits of his redeeming work, and to follow daily in the blessed steps of his most holy life; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Lord God, almighty and everlasting Father, you have brought us in safety to this new day: Preserve us with your mighty power, that we may not fall into sin, nor be overcome by adversity; and in all we do, direct us to the fulfilling of your purpose; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
