Heart heath and cholesterol in particular has caused much confusion in recent years, today I hope to dispel some of that confusion as I speak with Dr Ronald Krauss a medical research professor and advocate of a low carb diet. We hear why LDL is not a perfect measure of cardiovascular ill- health, why well because LDL particles come in different sizes, with varying protein content and pose different risks. HDL has traditionally been deemed to be the good cholesterol, but raising its levels hasnt been shown to be beneficial in terms of heart disease risk, in fact HDL thats too high is now viewed as a risk factor for heart disease. We learn about ApoB and Lipoprotein A and why they are important biomarkers, especially in families with a history of heart disease. I find out how arterial plaques form and if its possible to clean out your clogged arteries and how long does it takes. Plus we explore he importance of limiting carbohydrates rather than fat in our diets, if we want to address heart health.
