On this episode of the World Game-Changers podcast, Paul is joined again by Kristin Johnson to continue their conversation about the TV series Poldark and its storylines, specifically in this episode: Trust in romantic relationships. This conversation may contain spoilers.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • It’s romantic in the sense that there’s this rugged individualism yet there’s a big community with a big sense of duty and responsibility and self-sacrifice that is very romantic and heroic. But it’s also about the beauty, the nature, the longing of the spirit and a longing for refinement. As with certain aspects of today, it boils over into class envy with the haves, and have-nots.
  • Having never experienced this personally, psychologists say that you can heal from trust being broken by an affair but it takes a long time and some people maybe never really forget or are able to forgive at all, but it does happen.
  • Elizabeth loves Francis, Ross’ cousin, but at the same time it’s not what she feels for Ross and never can be because it’s a different kind of love. She builds a home and a family with Francis and when he dies it’s like something snaps within Ross, which isn’t grief over Francis – although he is sad – it’s more like his chance is here and he loses his head and totally forgets Demelza who knows where he’s going. Even the bluntest of us can really have a hard time expressing what’s going on.
  • You have to trust yourself and that you’re doing the right things at the right time for the right reasons, even if they might not make sense and even if things are hard. Especially you have to trust that your cause is just. Ross knows that what he’s doing against the French is the right thing, he’s fighting for his country and its interests like he always has.

BEST MOMENTS
‘Ross Poldark is a very romantic hero because he’s taking up such a big cause for his community’.

‘Demelza has a big heart and Elizabeth understands that, I think Demelza comes to like and respect Elizabeth but at the same time she’s always going to wonder “am I first in Ross’ mind”, and that betrayal stings because Elizabeth is the love of Ross’ life and she came first'.

‘Men crave sex and women crave love (I think that’s an over-generalization, but there is some truth it that)'.

‘Poldark is more than just a wonderful period drama with wonderful costumes… it’s about the human heart in conflict with itself, that’s why it’s lasting'.
