This was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him, and without him nothing that was made was made. In him was life, and life was the light of men. The light in the darkness shines, and the darkness did not prevail against it. There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came as a testimony, that he might bear witness to the light, so that all might believe through him. He was not the light, but to bear witness to the light. That true light, which illuminates every man, came to this world. He was in the world, and the world was made by him; but the world did not know him. He came to his own, and his own did not receive him.
