The War and Treaty’s Michael and Tanya Trotter grew up in Cleveland, Ohio, and Washington, DC, respectively, but both have family roots in the South. They also grew up in the musical traditions of their churches – Tanya in the Black Baptist Church and Michael in the Seventh Day Adventist Church – where they learned the power of song to move people. After becoming a father at a very young age, Michael eventually joined the armed forces and served in Iraq and Germany, where he took up songwriting as a way of dealing with his experiences there. Meanwhile Tanya embarked on a singing and acting career after a breakthrough appearance in Sister Act 2 alongside Whoopi Goldberg and Lauryn Hill. Now, after a long and sometimes traumatic journey, Michael and Tanya are married, touring, winning all sorts of awards, and set to release their fifth album together, and their fourth as The War and Treaty. Sid talks to Michael and Tanya about the new record, Plus One , as well as their collaboration with Miranda Lambert, what it was like to record at FAME studios in Muscle Shoals, and how they’re blending country, soul, gospel, and R&B. Are you feeling stuck? Today's episode is for me, so I can have some accountability. But there are lots of great things for you in it too.----more---- Let's face the fear of the edit together. I am writing a book and am at the point where it is time to edit. And edit a lot. But it is scary. We all reach places in our goals that are scary and we allow fear to keep us stuck. If this is you no matter your goal I have some tips for you. First reach out for help, and accept the feedback that comes. Realize there is no right or wrong answers, just answers Stop worrying It is ok to change your mind Set up some accountability for yourself including a plan, schedule and rewards. Be in the scary. Find balance and Own the self-sabotage. Life is amazing but it is hard. And to reach any of our goals we need to face the scary. But you are worth the effort. And in the end, there are no right tor wrong answers for your life, just answers. As long as you are doing things with intention and purpose you will make it. ----more---- Don't fear the Edit. We all run out of motivation at times. And it is usually only part way to our goals when we do. So what do we do when that happens? When the well of motivation runs dry? ----more---- Today we talk about rest instead of quitting, and how we can keep from giving up when we get tired, first by planning for rest. Then we need to stop beating ourselves up when we struggle—and then be patient with ourselves as we learn to rest. Set realistic expectations for yourself so you are not so frustrated. ----more---- You are completely capable of doing all the great things you have set for yourself. And you can make those goals and dreams come true. But you will get tired and you will want to quit. That is just part of being human. It is ok to not be motivated, and want to stop. But you can keep going even if you don’t want to. What do I want? This is a question I think we all ask or would like to ask if we could borrow some courage. I have found that many of my problems come from not being honest with myself.
