In this conversation, John reveals that change is the biggest disrupter that he is seeing right now and he talks through how they have learnt to adapt to change, the strategies and ways they work to ensure they continue to grow amidst change, doing great work for their people and clients alike. The agency, like many other businesses, has seen considerable change in recent years due to the pandemic but also due to the nature of how the creative industry has evolved and diversified - with advancements in technology and digital. For himself as the founder of the business, John has also seen considerable change as the agency has grown from 10 people in the early days to now being 50 strong. John describes their business as human-centric and this comes through in how he talks about the focus they put on the people that work within the business. John attributes the culture to the people that work within the business. They are encouraged to co-create solutions for their needs based on what’s relevant and meaningful to the people that work there. We discussed flexibility and what this looks like for them as an agency. Rather than mandating a certain amount of days in the office, he wants his people to want to come into the office. They’re treated like adults, and they have created an environment that supports this thinking. Initiatives such as their weekly Talkie Tuesday and monthly (in person) Connection Day encourage psychological safety, human connection and enjoyment. We hope you find the conversation valuable. Next up in our Walk The Talk – Lessons from Leaders series, we talk with Nick Pritchard, People & Resourcing Manager from Cadence Innova . In this conversation Nick generously shares some background about his own mental health journey and how this inspires him to support the mental health and wellbeing of all those that work at Cadence Innova. Culture is the business challenge that Nick feels is most pressing right now. Particularly, the importance of social connection and the value of being together in person at work, to support the mental health of all of us better. We discuss how culture and ways of working have changed over the last 3 to 5 years and how this is having a detrimental impact on levels of loneliness. Nick shares the initiatives and structures that they have in place at Cadence Innova from their families of peers who support each other in place of traditional managers and reportees, through to the office anchor days and social activities they introduce to create connection. We talk about the different cohorts of people that need particular support - from the younger generations through to those who are juggling the demands of work with the demands of parenting through to those going through peri/menopause. Nick reminds us we are human beings not human doings… and how the pandemic has provided us with a window (through Teams or Zoom) into people’s home lives, giving us a more holistic view of the people we work with - helping us to be more empathetic and understanding of everyone’s different worlds and struggles. Next up in our Walk The Talk – Lessons from Leaders series, we talk with Dr Sarah Berry about the (peri)menopause. Sarah is an Associate Professor in the Department of Nutritional Sciences at King's College London and Chief Scientist at ZOE. She’s also the Lead Scientist on the ZOE Menopause Advisory Board. Sarah’s academic background is nutritional science but in this conversation we talk specifically about the important subject of menopause and how nutrition and lifestyle are so connected to the menopause. More and more the menopause is becoming recognised as an important subject to be discussed in the workplace - helping to demystify and bust the stigma that surrounds it. There is still much mystery around the menopause - which affects more than 50% of the population (women and trans-gender men roughly between the ages of 45 and 55 - that said, it can begin earlier). And with women over 50 now representing the fastest growing demographic in the UK workplace, that means that an increasing number of employees are going to be experiencing menopausal symptoms during their careers, which can be very distressing for them. Not only will it impact those experiencing symptoms and this life change, but also those around them - their colleagues, friends and family, so this is an opportunity to continue to normalise the conversation, raising everyone’s awareness and understanding in this natural process of change for women and trans-gender men, so that those going through this life stage feel less lonely, more supported and understood in the workplace and beyond. In this conversation we hope to raise awareness and provide some practical solutions too for those who are struggling now or in the future and for those looking to support someone they know going through this period of their life.
