Vonda Pelto's Physical & Psychological Damage From Working With Serial Killers & Criminals In LA Central Jail: Vonda Pelto, Ph.D., author of Without Remorse: The Story of the Woman Who Kept Los Angeles' Serial Killers Alive, is asked by James Lowe about the psychological and physical damage she suffered from her three and a half years dealing with nearly a dozen serial killers and a host of other criminals of various stripes and talents. She admitted it had made her a bit more salty in her language and that "she swear like a longshoreman" and that she is "hell on wheels at women's clubs." But that is the light side, the dark involved constant paranoia when venturing out, making sure her house is secure, finding it very difficult to trust people because Vonda dealt with men who told her about their horrific crimes of killing people in graphic detail. Indeed the whole atmosphere at the Los Angeles Men's Central Jail was oppressive, still is, in ways that are difficult to convey in words. Vonda admitted the experience nearly broke her and that she nearly committed suicide, but she had two children and was therefore trapped in the jail until she passed her state board exams and became a licensed Clinical Psychologist. Once Vonda got that she didn't hesitate to quit, but that experience is still with her over 30-years later.
