Defense Mechanisms To Horror, Vonda's Nightmares Return Writing Book, William Bonin's Execution: On Thunderstruck Radio the host, Sancho Jones, asks Vonda a question from the chat room about how she uses humor in answering questions about dealing with the serial killers? Of course, Vonda replied, when we are all in stressful situations, especially being in the Los Angeles Men's Central Jail every day talking with serial killers about their crimes, the humor is a defense mechanism or else a person would just snap. This is a natural human response and can be seen in all kinds stories throughout history and walks of life. When she got hired to counsel and keep these serial killers and high profile inmates from harming themselves before trial, she determined to write a book about the experience for a variety of reasons. She would record her daily experiences on audio every night and had them transcribed after leaving her post in 1982 after 3 1/2 years. However, when she sat down to write the book the nightmares returned and she had to continually abandon her efforts. For over 15 years it was impossible to get past the horror of the nightmares in order to even get started. Finally, Vonda did get through the result is a look into the minds of serial killers through her everyday conversations and interactions with men most people don't get to meet or ever want to meet.
