South Africa plans to introduce an excise tax and minimum unit pricing to curb harmful alcohol consumption, which contributes to approximately 3 million deaths globally each year and strains public healthcare systems.
The National Treasury proposes raising alcohol taxes to reduce excessive drinking, particularly among lower-income groups.
Evidence from countries like Scotland, Wales, and Canada shows that such measures reduce alcohol-related deaths and hospital admissions. Despite resistance from the alcohol industry, studies affirm that higher taxes are cost-effective strategies for mitigating alcohol-related harms.
