EPISODE SUMMARY

In 1957, Althea Gibson became the first black tennis player at Wimbledon.

In 1887, England's Lottie Dod became the youngest ever winner at Wimbledon.

In 1933, it was the first MLB All-Star game and of course Babe Ruth hit the game's first ever HR.

In 1938, Leo Durocher scored after hitting a sacrifice bunt. Two errors allowed him to circle the bases on what is likely the shortest hit ball resulting in a HR

In 1931, Billy Burke won the longest golf playoff in history, beating George Von Elm by a shot after a 72-hole playoff.

In 1998, Se Ri Pak beat Jenny Chuasiriporn in a 20 hole playoff to win her second major tournament of the year.

In 1986, Bob Horner hit four home runs in a 9-inning game. Unfortunately, his effort was wasted in an 11-8 loss.

And in 1962, New York teammates Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris each hit a pair of home runs in a 7-5 win over the Minnesota Twins.

STEVE WHITE BIO

The host of 'This DiSH' is me, Steve White. I've spent most of my life behind a microphone. As a kid, I realized the power of the spoken word, hanging out with my dad while we talked to people around the world via ham radio. Later, I put that penchant for communication into practice and ventured into radio and TV. I've worked for a few television stations in North Carolina doing sports reporting and anchoring before transitioning to voiceover in 2015.

'This Day in Sports History' evolved from a lifetime of watching, listening to, and going to ballgames, reading books, magazines, and newspaper articles about my favorite teams and sports heroes. It's not only a labor of love but a voyage of discovery, finding those forgotten tidbits or fascinating things I never knew.
