ANC First Deputy Secretary-General Nomvula Mokonyane vowed over the weekend that the 112-year-old liberation movement will not die in their hands. After enjoying impressive electoral support since 1994, the ANC has for the first time lost its majority and is now forced into a Government of National Unity with nine parties. They gave a number of excuses for why the party performed so poorly from blaming the MK Party, the Polokwane Conference that saw the then President Thabo Mbeki ousted before finishing his term to a disconnect with the electorate. One of the big questions we are hoping to deal with in this hour is whether the ANC is following in the footsteps of liberation movements on the continent? What lessons can they learn and are their reasons valid enough to convince South Africans to vote them back in power? Also where do liberation movements go wrong?
