In this episode we talk to Mark Murphy MBE, double award Sony Gold winner and presenter of The Mark Murphy Breakfast Show on BBC Radio Suffolk.
Mark talks about growing up in Suffolk, his home and school life, and his first moves into the DJ world, as well as his first gig in Ipswich as a teenager.
Mark tells us about his first 'proper' job as a motor dealer, his early days and amusing stories as a Hospital radio presenter, and how he eventually got his foot through the door at the BBC. Mark worked for free to begin with and his persistence and drive paid off - as today he is the much loved lead presenter on BBC Radio Suffolk. He tells the story!
Mark talks about how he met his wife, Lesley Dolphin, also is also a presenter on BBC Radio Suffolk, and the competitive start to their relationship right through to a wedding in Las Vegas!
Mark is a well known and much loved public figure and a true advocate for Suffolk. He has led numerous successful campaigns across the region including 'Don't be a Tosser', 'Bin a Blade' (which resulted in 20,000 knives being handed in) and more recently he has increased the popularity of Suffolk's biggest coastline produce - Herring. Mark also talks about his painful childhood as he witnessed violence at home, and is now the patron of Lighthouse - a charity which supports women, young people and children who are victims of domestic abuse. www.lighthousewa.org.uk
Mark talks about his love of football and his home team Ipswich Town Football Club. Pre-pandemic he ran a Saturday show 'Life's s Pitch' and he tells us about meeting and working with some of his childhood heroes.
Listen to The Mark Murphy Breakfast Show from 6 am til 10 am every weekday.
Thanks Mark for a very entertaining and interesting chat and revealing how you got to hear about that incredible MBE!
