Last week the military in Gabon toppled the government of Ali Bongo. The coup came just weeks after the government of Mohammed Bazoum of Niger was overthrown by soldiers. There have been scenes of jubilation following the coups in both countries.
This week we ask: Are there reasons to rejoice the toppling of democratically governments in Africa? Will the coups end colonial 'grip' of African countries by past colonial masters; or are African countries simply falling into the hands of new masters?
