This is the first episode in a special series covering our new book Liberalism Unveiled: Forging a New Third Way For Singapore, published by World Scientific. The co-authors Bryan Cheang and Donovan Choy unpack the notion of Asian values and the challenge to liberal democracy in the Singapore context. Asian values advocates in Singapore include Kishore Mahbubani, Tommy Koh, and many more, and even today some still believe that liberalism is inapplicable beyond a narrow Western context. The authors acknowledge the criticisms made by Asian values scholars that Western nations have failed to live up to their liberal rhetoric and have often been bad role models. Yet, if one is truly concerned about cultural particularism and diversity, the paradigm of epistemic liberalism outlined in the book would be most attractive.
