Welcome to a new episode of The Fair Chase Podcast! Today, we are continuing our series on talking turkey with a focus on mastering the art of calling.
Today, we discuss:

  • Recap of the previous special episode with the Deer Hunter Podcast and Bowhunter Chronicles
  • Brief mention of the bear hunt in Alaska, which is coming up
  • Introduction of Jordan, a new team member who will be filming the Alaskan bear hunt
  • Recap of the first turkey hunting episode, which covered the basics of understanding turkey behavior
  • Understand different turkey calls and their meanings
  • Basic calls: Yelp, Cluck, and Purr
  • Use the cut call to express excitement or to sound more realistic
  • Be prepared to change strategies if a turkey isn't responding
  • Consider relocating if the current setup isn't successful
  • Many turkey hunters overcall, which can be counterproductive
  • Using a shotgun can provide a quicker, cleaner kill, but might damage the skull if collecting bones is desired
  • Try different calls from brands like Woodhaven and Rocky Mountain Specialties
  • Taking kids or other inexperienced hunters can extend the season and provide more chances to practice calling
