×For Toy Story's 30th anniversary, we’re diving deep into the film and studio that changed animation forever—but also how Pixar itself evolved from a revolutionary indie disruptor into a corporate franchise machine. We’ll explore Pixar’s early era, where its films tackled bold political and existential themes—from A Bug’s Life's working-class rebellion to WALL-E's anti-consumerist dystopia—before shifting, post-Disney acquisition, into a safer, identity-driven storytelling model that trades larger commentaries for more safe formulas. Then, we’ll break down the Toy Story franchise as a whole before going deep on the original masterpiece. We forgot to discuss the evolution of 2D to 3D CGI and how the oncoming AI boom and those two pieces of history connect, but I'm sure we'll do another animated film in the near future! Today we dive into the world of Bong Joon Ho—exploring his career, his major themes, and ranking his most iconic works. We then deep dive Parasite, his genre-shifting, class-conflict masterpiece. We discuss how he shapes architecture into allegory, comedy into tragedy, and mobility into myth. Parasite might be the smartest movie of the 21st century—so we have a lot to say about it in this 3+ hour discussion! Kelsi and Trey dive deep into the history of Batman on screen , ranking every live-action portrayal of the Dark Knight and debating what each version got right (or horribly wrong). And then we get to our major conversation on Matt Reeves’ The Batman and Robert Pattinson’s fragile, gothic detective take on the character. We’ll break down the noir-infused world Reeves has built, why Pattinson’s emotionally stunted Bruce Wayne is the most fascinating interpretation yet, and how this film redefines Gotham’s rogues gallery with Paul Dano’s terrifying Riddler, Colin Farrell’s scene-stealing Penguin, and Zoë Kravitz’s mesmerizing, scene-stealing Selina Kyle. Kelsi and Trey dive into Steven Soderbergh’s thrilling 2025 double feature, Black Bag and Presence —two wildly different films that both explore trust, surveillance, and relationships. Black Bag is a sexy, razor-sharp spy thriller where Michael Fassbender and Cate Blanchett play elite MI6 agents—and longtime spouses—caught in a web of secrets, betrayals, and two unforgettable dinner parties. Meanwhile, Presence is a meticulously crafted, first-person ghost story that strips the haunted house genre down to its bones, using surveillance-like filmmaking to expose the fractures in a grieving family. Kelsi and Trey dive into Mickey 17 , Bong Joon-ho’s most ambitious but messiest film yet—a sci-fi satire packed with class commentary, genre chaos, and existential dread, but also plagued by tonal inconsistency, underdeveloped themes, and what maybe feels like studio interference. We break down the good (Robert Pattinson’s delightfully weird dual performance, the darkly hilarious death montage, and some great satire on labor exploitation), the bad (a scattered third act, underbaked supporting characters like Naomi Ackie’s Nasha and Steven Yeun’s Timo, and an underwhelming visual style), and the frustrating (a possible scrapped twist about Mark Ruffalo’s character, weird pacing issues, and the sense that Warner Bros. meddled with the final cut). Plus, we discuss why the Hunger Games -style YA dystopian vibe isn’t necessarily a bad thing, and how ironic it is that people are mad a movie about corporate exploitation lost a corporate giant millions of dollars. Kelsi and Trey dive deep into the biggest moments of the 2025 Oscars—starting with Anora’s massive night, where Sean Baker dominated with his four wins. We break down why No Other Land’s Best Documentary Feature win was one of the most politically powerful moments of the night along with I’m Still Here . We also discuss the Mikey Madison vs. Demi Moore and Fernanda Torres debate—a win that highlights the Academy’s gendered bias. As well as the other race, the Timothée Chalamet loss and the Adrien Brody speech (!?). Happy 50 Patreon episodes! Kelsi and Trey explore Ryan Coogler's Creed as both a continuation and reclamation of the Rocky franchise, centering Michael B. Jordan’s Adonis Creed in a narrative that reclaims Philly, the Creed name, and boxing from the Rocky IP. We discuss Coogler's masterful balancing act of making an exciting sports drama, while also interrogating/honoring the Rocky mythos. We also talk Coogler and MBJ's careers as filmmakers, and what their newest film Sinners could look like! Kelsi and Trey are joined by special guest James Steck to revisit the haunting world of Robert Eggers. They kick off with a quick conversation about Eggers’ recent retelling of Nosferatu, exploring its somewhat-successful reimagination of the classic vampire tale. We then dive deep into The Lighthouse, unpacking its gripping chamber thriller/horror atmosphere and mythic deconstruction of masculinity-led by two all-time performances from Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson. We then transition to the masterful career of Jenkins, whose groundbreaking work in Moonlight redefined modern queer cinema. Kelsi and Trey dive deep into Luca Guadagnino’s Queer , starring Daniel Craig and Drew Starkey. This hypnotic, surreal adaptation of William S. Burroughs’ unfinished novel explores longing, loneliness, and identity through bold visual storytelling and complex characters. Set in a dreamlike 1950s Mexico City, the film blends stunning performances, immersive design, and a hallucinatory narrative to examine the tension between desire and self-destruction. Also, Drew Starkey is a babe. Kelsi and Trey dive into Brady Corbet’s The Brutalist, a sprawling, visually stunning epic that explores the intersection of art, legacy, and the immigrant experience. We unpack its breathtaking opening sequence, the haunting score by Daniel Blumberg, and its ambitious narrative following László Tóth (Adrien Brody), a Holocaust survivor and architect navigating postwar America under the oppressive control of a manipulative patron (Guy Pearce). While we admire Corbet’s big filmmaking choices and meticulous design, we critique the film’s reliance on archetypes, tired tropes, blunt symbolism, and its reluctance to fully trust its audience. Is The Brutalist a modern cinematic masterpiece or a monument that struggles to stand out among giants?
