If you haven't heard of quadraphonic sound, join the club. The early-stage surround sound technology quietly died in the late 1970s, and was ultimately supplanted by innumerable other spatial audio technologies.

In its heyday, it was used by the likes of Pink Floyd and The Who.

Quadraphonic sound was all about 4-speaker surround sound (technically 4.0 surround sound). These days, surround sound can spread over 100+ speakers for a totally immersive experience.

So why is somebody bringing quad back?

In this edition of the Digital Music News Podcast, audiophile/entrepreneur/tinkerer KamranV explained why he's bringing this retro technology back, and why he thinks artists will love it.

But this isn't just idle thought: KamranV has already released a live quadraphonic LP with electronica artist Suzanne Ciani.
