A HERO is someone who does something special to HELP OTHERS. Every hero STARTS as a CHILD, and every Child can CHOOSE to become a Hero... And I Know that YOU Can Be a HERO TOO!

Okay, boys and girls...Moms and Dads... Good THURSDAY morning to you! It’s the 7th day of October, and it is National Frappé Day! Well, alright then. So....I know that the term Frappé can refer to just about ANY cold, slushy, fomey, sugary, creamy drink, but MOST of the time, when people order a Frappé, it starts with a coffee base, and that’s where I personally draw the line. Anybody who knows me, knows that I have 2 rules about coffee. 1.) If it’s GOOD coffee, don’t mess it up by putting stuff in it. And 2.) If it’s NOT good coffee, don’t drink it. But for those of you who DO like messed up COLD coffee, be happy! Today is National Frappé day!

Well, today, I thought I would start out by bringing you a story about one of my FAVORITE teachers! Mr. Delaney. Mr. Delaney was a great teacher, and he was an even greater storyteller! At LEAST once a week, he would tell a story about.. SOMETHING but regardless of what the story was about, it seemed to always have a good point to it. After each of his stories, his students couldn’t help but feel like better people for having heard them. Coming up...a story about Mr. Delaney telling a story about his father. It’s called Mr. Delaney’s Father...And here it is! Go.

******

Mr. Delaney, who was just plain famous for his storytelling, often liked talking about his father, Henry Delaney. “It was my father,” said Mr. Delaney, “who first taught me about people who HELP and people who hurt.”

Mr. Delaney said that when young Henry was in school, it was pretty common for boys to play tricks on girls. “Back then,” he said, “they didn’t have ball point pens and markers. They had fountain pens that had to be dipped in ink after writing every few words. So every student’s desk had a jar of black ink built into the desk.” Mr. Delaney went on to explain that when a girl was sitting in front of a boy, the boy often thought it was funny to dip the end of the girl’s hair in the ink. A lot of girls had ink stains at the ends of their long hair. The girls would be furious, and the boys would laugh even more.

Not Henry, though. He could see those boys just had hurtful attitudes, somehow thinking (in a very shallow minded way) that it was funny, and he would stop them every time he could. He was nice to the girls, and they all liked him very much. They considered him to be their HERO. “In fact, when they got a little older,” said Mr. Delaney, “one of those same girls married him, and she became my mother!

“‘HEROES HELP others,’ my dad would always tell me. ‘HEROES are winners,’ he would say. And then he would look at my mother and say, ‘I’m a winner!’” Yes, Mr. Delaney learned from a very early age just how much HEROES indeed are winners!

*****

Drums out.

(Laughing) You know, my wife and I have one of those old school desks with the ink well in it, just like the ones Mr. Delaney’s father had when he was in school. We’ve had that desk for nearly 40 years, and it lives proudly in a corner of our dining room. Alright, “nough of that. But before we move on, do you have a favorite story about someone in your family? Also, Mr. Delaney learned a very important lesson from his father. Who is an adult in your life who has HELPED you learn something important? AND... Are you setting a good example for someone younger than you? Finally, how would you explain to someone the difference between being HELPFUL and being hurtful? Just some questions to ask yourself on this Thursday morning.

Okay....Just ahead, another visit with my Old Irish Pappy... Also, the Question of the Day, and A Reflection of Your Future...right here on this Thursday edition of TCN Mornings.

Right now, though, I wanted to talk about my book. It's called Mr. Delaney's Mirror. It's about a student in Mr. Delaney's class who gets a glimpse of her own personal FUTURE Self, and the life she will be having when she's like 30-years old! Her name was Bay Chandler, and her future according to the mirror was NOT a happy one. The rest of the book follows Bay through middle school, high school, and college. It shows step-by-step what she did to take her from the person she was in Mr. Delaney’s class to the FUTURE Bay she WANTED to be, instead of the one she saw in the mirror. You can order the book on Amazon.com, or anywhere books are sold online. Just Google Mr. Delaney’s Mirror. Mr. Delaney's Mirror. Check it out!!

Well, as I’ve mentioned many times before, I'm hoping you have someone in YOUR life like My Old Irish Pappy. Someone who is FULL of wisdom, who can TEACH you on a regular basis about life and how to live it better.

Pappy quote...

Yep! ALWAYS spend less than you earn. And always SAVE part of what you earn! No exceptions! You know, I think that’s important enough to repeat it one more time. ALWAYS spend less than you earn. And always SAVE part of what you earn! No exceptions!

Stinger.

Okay, Now... It's time for the QUESTION OF THE DAY! As you recall, today is National Frappé Day! And I mentioned that the term Frappé can refer to just about ANY cold, slushy, fomey, sugary, creamy drink, but MOST of the time, when people order a Frappé, it starts with a coffee base. So, let’s have a question about that: Where does coffee come from, and how is it processed to be ready to brew? Where does coffee come from, and how is it processed to be ready to brew?

If you know, email your answer to MYANSWER@TCNmornings.com. Tell us your first name, your city and state, and of course, your answer, and the first correct answer will be featured right here TOMORROW. That email address again is MYANSWER@TCNmornings.com.

So...Yesterday, Abbey from Harrington, Deleward answered correctly about the railroad frog. A railroad frog, she said, is the movable switching rail mechanism at the intersection of two sets of railroad tracks. And what it does is that it makes it possible for a train... or just certain cars from a train to go onto a different set of tracks. And that is exactly correct! So, when you get a chance, look up the term RAILROAD FROG, and learn more about it for yourself. It’s really pretty fascinating. And, thank you, Abbey for that!

Well, here’s hoping you have a GREAT rest of your day!! Stick around...one more quick segment ahead, but as for me, Jim Lord...I...will see YOU...tomorrow for the FRIDAY edition of TCN Mornings!

Abbey's deeper thinker.

Closer.

Dear Parents,

After years of development, trial, and revision, we are so excited to now share with you the most effective version yet of our Proactive Bully Prevention Program that has proven to "change the culture" at hundreds of campuses across America in profound ways. Research has shown the TCN Method™ to be the single most effective school based Violence and Bully Prevention Intervention of its entire genre. We have hundreds of testimonials from educators describing the results they have gotten, and you can view many of these at www.TheCharacterNetwork.org/Testimonials

This program, The Beginning of a Famous Herois used in conjunction with a companion program called Bully Alert!in schools played over the intercom during morning announcements twice or more each school week, and backed up by a common culture which reinforces the principles taught, at every turn, and incorporates the phrases of the academic language during any teachable moment.

These two sets of stories work together to convey a common academic language which says, “A bully is a person who hurts others on purpose (even if it’s just hurting their feelings) but a HERO is a person who HELPS others. So CHOOSE to be a HERO by HELPING instead of a bully by hurting.”

They also promote the concept of POSITIVE PERSONAL VISION, helping each student to realistically visualize his or her own "Future Self," and in doing so help relate consequences of actions and attitudes today (good or bad) to that future self.

It is the spaced repetition of these principles that makes the program effective. It is the 100% turn-key presentation that makes it easy!

This program takes VIRTUALLY NO TIME (only 4 minutes a week!) away from classroom instruction. But it also provides a common language across the entire campus when teachable moments occur!

The TCN Method has been extraordinarily successful in the past, in almost a thousand schools all across America, from California to New York, with a special concentration all over Texas, where The Character Network is based, and has been used to the benefit of well over a million students across the past two decades.

Then Covid struck, with the majority of schools ceasing in classroom instruction altogether for the majority of the previous school year, and after years of successful growth, we found ourselves in the very difficult situation of having to rebuild almost from scratch. So we started a morning podcast to help make the principles and teachings of TCN available to kids to have at home… but we need help from parents like you to get the word out, and also to help us gather financial support to once again make the method available again to not just the schools we lost due to Covid, but to every school and every child who could benefit and needs this going forward.

We invite you to become a coworker with us on our mission. Please start by visiting us at www.Patreon.com/theCharacterNetwork and considering becoming a sponsor for this work, and then dropping us a line at info@thecharacternetwork.org so we can learn more about you. Thank you so much!
