While many people saw The Karate Kid as a typical sports movie, with the underdog triumphing against all odds, it did have some deeper undercurrents to it. (In fact, we’ve seen some of the echoes of its social conscience reflected in the sequel series Cobra Kai.) One of the standout scenes in the original film focused on the tortured history of Daniel LaRusso’s teacher and mentor, Mr. Miyagi, As it turns out, Miyagi was a war hero during World War II, but that didn’t keep his family out of the internment camps where many Japanese Americans were held during the height of the hostilities. Learning about Miyagi’s past stunned LaRusso and served as a key moment in the characters’ relationship. Looking back on that first film at a Niagara Falls Comic Con Panel a few years back, star Ralph Macchio has vivid memories of filming that scene with Pat Morita, and he talked to us about how significant the scene was — not just to the movie, but to Hollywood.
