Welcome to Tangents, a podcast that explores ethical storytelling.
In this episode, we listen to a panel discussion hosted by Dr. Sara Cheik Husain as they discuss the film: Subject. This film is about the ethics of documentary making, and the complex relationship between filmmakers and their subjects.
Panelists:
Dr. Sara Cheik Husain - Host - Our Race
Margie Ratliff - Film producer
Glenn Shea - Indigenous Story Teller
Shane Charles - Cochair, Reconciliation Victoria
Diana Nguyen - Actor, Comedian and Dancer/Influencer
Documentaries can be powerful tools for education, empathy, and social change. But they also involve real people with real lives, and it's important to be mindful of the ethical implications of telling their stories.
In this panel discussion, we'll hear from filmmakers, scholars, and activists about the challenges and opportunities of ethical storytelling. We'll explore questions such as:

  • How can filmmakers protect the rights of Story Holders?
  • How can filmmakers share power with Story hOlders and give them a voice in how their stories are told?
  • How can we incorporate ethical Story telling into our work and ensure that we protect the rights of Story Holders?

We'll also discuss the film Subject in more detail, and how it raises important questions about the ethics of documentary making.
Join us for a fascinating and thought-provoking discussion about ethical storytelling
