What is your “sphere of influence” and how can you change how you show up to it?
...
John Stewart served on the faculty of the Department of Communication at the University of Washington from 1969 to 2001; was Vice President for Academic Affairs at the University of Dubuque; and became Special Assistant to the President of UD in 2010, retiring in 2016 to focus his training and consulting efforts on diversity-equity-inclusion (DEI) projects. Between 1973 and 2013, John published 11 editions of the widely-adopted Bridges Not Walls: A Book About Interpersonal Communication. In 2017 he published Personal Communicating and Racial Equity, 2nd. ed. (2017), and his most recent book is Dismantling Racism One On One: Uniqueness Narrative Equity (2023). John contributed the chapter “Through Empathizing to Co-constructing Uniquenesses” to the open access book, Through Your Eyes: Research and New Perspectives on Empathy (2024).
Today, John and Abbie discuss the power of communication, “co-constructing uniquenesses,” and interpersonal instances of racism in a larger context of systemic racism and white supremacy. John offers three ways to dismantle racism one on one: offering and inviting reflections, offering and inviting choices, and offering and inviting feelings. Abbie and John explore the importance of offerings and invitations in conversation for creating felt trust. John describes “co-constructing uniqueness” as a step beyond empathy.
