Sermon Notes
It's helpful for every Christian to have a simple and succinct way to explain the gospel. John 3:16 is a popular "pocket version" of the gospel. In it we learn about:
- The Love of God
- It is revealed by action
- It is directed toward the sinful world
- It gives the costly gift of Jesus, the eternally beloved Son
- Our Response
- Whoever - it's open to everyone!
- Believes into - The Christian faith involves not only content (there is something to believe), but also trust (someone to rely upon)
- Two Possible Outcomes
- Perishing - the opposite of abundant life, the default position of everyone (see John 3:18 "whoever does not believe is condemned already")
- Eternal life - continues after death, but accessible now as the presence and power of Jesus in daily life
Sermon Application
Discussion Questions:
- What are some differences between God's love and a worldly version of love?
- Why is "whoever" a gospel word?
- How can the gospel be a force for true diversity, equality and inclusion in the world?
- What does believing "into" Jesus look like in your daily life?
- Why is perishing the "default" outcome for human beings?
- Besides John 3:16, do you have a favorite way to explain the gospel (such as another bible verse or simple illustration)?
