This session from the Westminster Fellowship Autumn Conference delves into the significance of preaching as outlined in the Westminster Directory for Worship, emphasising its foundational role in the Reformation. The discussion highlights how preaching was not merely an aspect of worship but central to the reformation of the church’s practices and beliefs. Kevin DeYoung draws attention to the historical context of worship and how the Puritans, particularly William Perkins, influenced preaching's approach, advocating for clarity and application of Scripture. Key elements of effective preaching are explored, including the necessity of reading the text, explaining its meaning, and applying it to the lives of congregants. Ultimately, the conversation underscores the importance of balancing doctrinal integrity with engaging and accessible communication in the pulpit, encouraging a return to the core teachings of Scripture as a means of spiritual nourishment.
