Part 1:
We talk with Dudley Poston, Professor Emeritus, Texas A&M, and demographer.
We discuss the demographic problems in China: not enough women, due to the one-child policy that favored boy children; the age of the population, and the trend of fewer children being born. This indicates a crisis that is affecting China now, and predicts a more problematic future. The US will likely see similar effects unless immigration is increased.
Part 2: Jonathan Feingold, Boston University, Race Class
Episode. 32 | Do You Believe White Privilege is a Fact " Teaching The Truth on Trial in Tennessee
Following the 2020-21 school year, the Sullivan County (TN) school board fired Matthew Hawn, a high school social studies teacher. As was reported at the time, the School Board punished Mr. Hawn after he assigned his Contemporary Issues class a Ta-Nehisi Coates article and shared a spoken word poem by Kyla Jenee Lacey. On Monday, after nearly three years, Mr. Hawn had his first opportunity to challenge his firing in Court. Jon traveled to Tennessee to observe the hearing. In this episode, Jon and Ernie explore the dynamics in the courtroom, why this case affects all Tennessee teachers, and a question that hung over the day: Is White Privilege a Fact?
