Bitcoin Mining Shutdown Caused 20% Surge In Norwegian Electricity Bills

The closure of a Bitcoin mining facility in the Norwegian town of Hadsel has led to a 20% increase in electricity bills for residents.
The mine was shut down after the municipality declined to renew its permit due to noise complaints.
Kryptovault operated the mining facility for 20% of local power company Noranett’s revenue.
With the loss of its largest customer, Noranett is raising prices for households to compensate.
Locals had complained for years about noise from the mine’s cooling fans. However, due to the closure, residents are now faced with paying several hundred dollars more per year for electricity.
“When such a large individual customer switches off overnight, it has an impact,” said a Noranett manager.
The company estimates bills could rise by up to $300 monthly.
The situation highlights how Bitcoin mining can help reduce electricity costs by distributing grid expenses to a larger customer base. Bitcoin mine’s continued operation would have prevented the rate spike for citizens.

The Taiwanese company Gold Apollo had contracted with a company called B.A.C. Consulting in Hungary to manufacture the pagers. B.A.C. Consulting was one of three shell companies that Israel created to mask the true manufacturer of the communications equipment: Israeli intelligence.
B.A.C. Consulting created real pagers for numerous customers to create the perception of a legitimate company in order to get picked up for the contract to produce the pagers for Hezbollah.
The pagers manufactured for Hezbollah were separate from those made for other clients, the report said. The pagers that Hezbollah received “contained batteries laced with the explosive PETN” and began shipping in 2022, the report said.

Ukraine has banned use of the Telegram messaging app on official devices used by government officials, military personnel and critical workers because it believes its enemy Russia can spy on both messages and users, a top security body said on Friday.

WIN: Georgia to Require Hand Count of Ballots to Confirm Electronic Results.

In another win for election integrity efforts in Georgia, the state board of elections—in a 3-2 decision—is requiring counties to hand count all ballots in November’s election. According to the Georgia State Election Board, ballots will still be counted electronically as well, but the hand count will be required prior to official certification of the election results.

Critics of the decision are disingenuously claiming that requiring a handout has the potential of “upending the November election” and could “[delay] reporting of results by weeks if not months.” However, the electronic count will still occur, and voters will almost certainly know the election results reasonably quickly.

In the current political environment, such an outbreak of violence is not as unthinkable as it used to be, according to a bipartisan collection of House members. The attempted assassination of members at a congressional baseball team practice in 2017, the violent attack on the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, a dramatic spike in threats against members and, most recently, a possible second assassination attempt against former president Donald Trump highlight the need for Congress to ensure it can continue to govern in the aftermath of mass violence, they said. To address such a scenario, these four House members — two Republicans and two Democrats — are pushing an unlikely solution: a constitutional amendment that would allow members to be replaced quickly in the event of a mass-casualty event. In addition to ensuring uninterrupted representation for constituents, the amendment would discourage attempts to use violence to sway the balance of power in the House.
“We’ve seen a 300 percent increase in threats against members over the last seven years, according to the Capitol Police,” said Rep. Derek Kilmer (D-Wash.), one of four lawmakers pushing the issue. “In an environment where we have seen a growing tendency toward political violence, imagine — horrifically — a baseball practice where someone has bad intentions and better aim. You can literally flip a majority for three to four months. Which I think is a frightening incentive for political violence.” Their proposed constitutional amendment would require each member of the House to submit the names of at least five individuals from his or her political party to their state’s governor. In the event of that representative’s death, the governor would choose a name from the list within 10 days, and the House speaker would be required to seat them immediately.
The “continuity amendment” would also deny a would-be assassin the power to flip control of the House from one party to another, Kilmer said.
Only 27 states have responded to the survey so far, Gambler said, but some state election officials reported that “it would be difficult to select candidates within the time frame required by the law.” Source: stripes.com
