FACEBOOK BUYS INSTAGRAM In April of 2012, Facebook announced it was acquiring photo site Instagram for a cool billion dollars. Cash–rich Facebook needed a few of Instagram’s assets, but not the physical kind. 2. GOOGLE BUYS NEST LABS 3. BURGER KING BUYS TIM HORTONS In January 2014, 3G Capital, a Brazilian private equity firm, bought Tim Hortons Inc., the Canadian doughnut chain, in a move designed to increase the total number of outlets The Biggest Private 4. YAHOO BUYS TUMBLR The most interesting aspect of the Yahoo/Tumblr nuptials was not the $1.1 billion cash acquisition price but the “wedding” vows. Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer publicly promised not to “screw it up.” 5. BC PARTNERS BUYS PETSMART In December 2014, BC Partners La Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec, StepStone and Longview Asset Management announced they were buying out pet supply retailer PetSmart for $8.7 billion. 6. EBAY BUYS BRAINTREE 7. BLACKSTONE BUYS GATES GLOBAL 8. CARLYLE BUYS ACOSTA 9. ONEX BUYS SIG COMBIBLOC 10. IMS HEALTH BUYS APPATURE 11.
