Good Friday of the Lord's Passion • An item is worth what someone is willing to pay for it. Something that is rare, unique, or has special value might fetch more than you would imagine.

What am I worth? If we let the world set our value, we will always find ourselves being cheated. Imagining bringing yourself into the Antiques Roadshow. Jesus looks you over and says, "Now this one is a special piece, a one-of-a-kind with a unique history. Yes, I would pay everything for this one, too." Jesus is willing to not only trade his life for yours, but to offer his life as a painful and bloody sacrifice.

What is Jesus worth to you? Do we find ourselves asking, "What's the minimum amount I need to fast? Is it OK to just commit venial sins? Is this Holy Day required?"

When the Bishops decided in 1966 that meatless Fridays would no longer bind under pain of sin, they intended for Catholics to continue to mark Friday as a special day of prayer, fasting, and works of charity. Every Friday should be a little Good Friday, just like every Sunday should be a little Easter. Jesus was willing to pay everything for you. How much are you willing to give to Him?

Going Deeper: Read the church's laws on fasting. Consider resuming the practice of meatless Fridays throughout the year as a small sacrifice for love of Christ. What are other ways Friday can be lived as a kind of weekly Lenten day?
