Marina is a Human Rights journalist and practitioner and a documentary filmmaker. Her work is internationally recognized and her passion for storytelling is undeniable.

Her work experience includes reporting on major human rights issues in Moldova at NewsMaker;
Consulting in Minorities and Indigenous Peoples Section, Senior Minority Fellow at the United Nations Human Rights etc

After receiving a Chevening scholarship, she followed her passion that she had since she was little and went to study ethnographic and documentary filmmaking at the University College of London. While being there and with the support of her mentor, Marina applied for One World Media’s Global Short Docs Forum, where she was accepted and learned a lot about pitching to international broadcasters, which led to her first documentary Last Chance for Justice to be shown twice on BBC (it is still available on iplayer)

The film follows the story of Khadicha Askarova who has been campaigning for the release of her human rights activist husband who was imprisoned for crimes he said he didn’t commit. Marina filmed, interviewed, directed, produced and edited the movie herself. The pandemic, a hard personal loss and a very unexpected and sad turn of events made the process harder, but the film is now speaking for itself and putting a spotlight on the situation of many people in Kyrgyzstan.

Marina spoke candidly in this interview about the experience of making the movie, but also about the award wining short doc that followed: Box of Strawberries; her contribution to the Guardian coverage on Moldova during parliamentary elections in the Europe’s Baby Bust section; as well as many other interesting topics.

Marina is also a co-host alongside Alisa Kustikova on the podcast Это реально!
