Psalm 32 is called a "Maskil of David." We don't know for certain what a Maskil is. It is probably a type of song.Psalm 32 is not itself a prayer, but rather a song of instruction. The voice keeps changing in this Psalm. Verses 1-2 are in the third person. Verses 3-7 shift to the first person addressing God as "you." But then verses 8-9 stay in the first person, but the second person addressed is now the hearer, as David instructing his hearers in the way "you" should go. And then verses 10-11 conclude with an exhortation to "you" but now the "you" are the righteous.We've been seeing that Book One of the Psalms portrays a world where the King is on the throne. And yet things are not as they should be. We are not as we should be.The LORD's anointed – the Messiah – has ascended the hill of the LORD. He dwells at God's right hand. And because Jesus sits at God's right hand – we who sing these songs with him have confidence – because we wait upon the LORD who has not just promised that he would come to David but he has come in the flesh in our Lord Jesus Christ!
