Edward ”Ned” Kelly syntyi köyhään perheeseen 1800-luvun Australiassa. Perheen isä joutui turvautumaan rikollisuuteen saadakseen rahaa perheensä elättämiseen. Tämän johdosta Kellyjen koti oli jatkuvasti virkavallan kotietsintöjen kohteena. Isän kuoltua Nedistä tuli perheenpää, joten hän jätti koulunsa kesken 12-vuotiaana mennäkseen töihin. Myöskään Ned ei pysynyt kaidalla polulla vaan oli jatkuvasti nokat vastakkain poliisien kanssa. Vuonna 1877 humalassa ollut konstaapeli Fizpatrick oli tullut Kellyjen kotiin pidättämään Nedin 16-vuotiasta pikkuveljeä Dania hevosvarkauksista. Pidätyksen aikana oli syntynyt kärhämä, jonka jälkeen konstaapeli heitettiin ulos talosta. Myöhemmin tämän välikohtauksen johdosta perheen äiti Ellen pidätettiin ja Dan sekä Ned pakenivat vuorille.
