Miami Senior QB Cam Ward hit Isaiah Horton with a 1-yard TD pass with just 1:57 left for what would become the game-winning score, as the #7 Canes came back from a 10-point deficit in the 4th quarter to beat Virginia Tech 38-34 in the ACC opener for both teams on Friday at The Rock.

But it almost never happened, as Da’Quan Felton caught a 30-yard would-be touchdown pass from Kyron Drones (into a crowd) on the last play of the game, which would have given Tech the victory. The call was overturned on review.

Ward threw for 343 yards and four touchdowns, extending his national lead to 18 scoring throws this season. He also ran in a 17-yard score.

The Hurricanes (5-0, 1-0) trailed by double digits three times, the last of those when the Hokies went up 34-24 with 12:05 left.

Miami won its ACC opener for the first time in four years and remain unbeaten, snapping Virginia Tech's four-game win streak in their ACC openers.

Drones threw for two TD passes, and Bhayshul Tuten rushed for 141 yards and another score for Virginia Tech. (2-3, 0-1)

Andy Borregales' 56-yard field goal to end the first half loomed large by night's end. John Love hit career-high field goals of 52 and 56 yards for Virginia Tech.

The Hokies turned three Miami turnovers into 14 points and looked ready to knock off a team ranked 7th or higher for the first time since 2004.

On the go-ahead drive, Miami escaped disaster three times.First, when Xavier Restrepo fell on his butt on a fourth-and-3 play with the ball already on the way, and he somehow caught it while on the ground.

On a first down play just after, Ward was getting dragged down by Keyshawn Burgos, broke that tackle, broke another one, then shoveled it to Riley Williams for a 26-yard gain to the 1-yard line.Ward hit Horton on the next play for the GW score.

The Hurricanes stopped the Hokies on a fake field goal attempt from inside the ten yard-linein the second half. If the Hokies had taken the there, they could have tried a 48-yard field goal for the win.

Miami escaped what would have been a very bad loss in the AP Top 25. The Hurricanes should remain in the Top 10.
