Melanin-rich skin tones, specifically those categorized as Fitzpatrick levels IV-VI, are vastly under-represented in the professional skin care industry’s training curricula. Classes often omit how skin conditions present in darker skin tone variations which causes a learning gap that can lead to inequalities in skin care, from the initial client consultation through skin analysis and treatment. Dermalogica has launched Treating Melanin-Rich Skin, an online course for skin therapists and future industry professionals to strengthen their foundational knowledge of understanding and treating melanin-rich skin.

In this 3 part series, we explore skin conditions and treatments with the leading experts featured in the free online course. In part 3, we meet with expert, Kristina Smith, Training & Development Manager, who explains the science of melanin and how aging skin responds and appears in melanin-rich skin. She also shares her advice for professionals along with some common skin myths and service misconceptions when treating darker skin tone variations.
