Philly kickstarting trash collection service twice a week

Philadelphia is kickstarting a twice-a-week trash collection program in parts of the city. The program — which is part of Mayor Cherelle Parker’s “Safer, Cleaner, Greener” initiative — will start on Dec. 2. Twice-weekly trash pickup will take place in parts of Center City and South Philadelphia, in the boundaries of Callowhill Street to Pattison Avenue, between the Schuylkill Expressway (30th Street) and Delaware Avenue. Residents within these boundaries will be permitted to put out up to eight bags, four containers and two household compactable items per collection service. The program does not include recycling; that will still be collected once a week. The city cautions residents that mixing recycling with trash during the second collection is prohibited and will issue fines if recycling materials are found in the trash. (Photo credit: Getty Images)
