Harrison Okene, a Nigerian ship's cook, faced a remarkable ordeal of survival. In May 2013, he was trapped in an underwater vessel, the Jascon 4, for an astonishing 60 hours before being miraculously rescued. The tugboat had capsized and sunk off the coast of Nigeria while supporting an oil platform.

Okene found himself within an air pocket in the upturned hull of the ship as it rapidly sank. Struggling against panic, he clung to hope as water submerged the vessel completely. Surviving on Coca-Cola and biscuits, he endured darkness, cold, and the constant threat of drowning. With no means of communication, he remained alone in the depths, unsure if rescue would ever come.

Meanwhile, a Dutch underwater rescue team, sent to recover bodies, descended to the wreck site. Against all odds, one diver, Nico van Heerden, discovered Okene alive inside the sunken vessel. Okene, disoriented and frightened, initially mistook the diver for a sea creature. Guided by the diver's light, he swam towards safety, rescued from the depths.

Okene's survival story captured global attention, hailed as a miraculous testament to the human spirit. It shed light on the hazards faced by offshore workers and emphasised the importance of stringent safety measures. His extraordinary tale of endurance and resilience serves as an inspiration, reminding us of the unwavering will to survive, even in the most perilous circumstances.
