As politicians, lobbyists, and advocacy groups head to the state Capitol this January to make new laws that affect our community, there is one group that contains millions of Black and Hispanic Texans yet have little to no representation: renters. But we in Texas Tenants For Change are righting that wrong today. Our mission as tenant advocates from across Texas will be to march to Austin this January when the legislature meets, with a petition demanding change in hand. We want change in skyrocketing rents, changes in unjust evictions, changes in substandard living conditions, and prevention of landlord abuses. These simple asks are common sense provisions all Texans can get behind.Texas falls behind other states when it comes to protections for renters, especially rights for Black and Hispanic tenants whose eviction rates are significantly higher than their white counterparts. With millions of renters in the state of Texas, it’s time to realize that we should have power to match those numbers. Our petition can be viewed at Texas Tenants For Change - texastenantsforchange.org, Texas Tenants' Union - txtenants.org, Petition To Texas Government Officials. We are asking for basic human rights and we need your eyes, ears, and voices to make change at this legislative session.
