Hebrews is an elegant and sophisticated theological gospel tract aimed at showing Jews that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, the Savior of the world, and that He is superior to everyone and everything. It shows that the New Covenant inaugurated by Jesus when He shed His blood to atone for all sin for all time, is superior in every way to the Old Covenant.In the first 10 chapters, you learn that Jesus is the Creator. He is superior to angels, to Moses, to Joshua, and to every priest and high priest who ever lived. His sacrifice is superior to every sacrifice ever offered, and His death renders all the Old Covenant sacrifices obsolete.Several times in Hebrews the author of this great book–whose name we don't know–paused his theological reasoning to call the spiritually undecided to come to Christ, and to call the spiritually uncommitted to come all the way to following Christ as Lord. One of those warnings ends chapter 10 with a quote and application of Habakkuk 2:4.Hebrews 10:38: BUT MY RIGHTEOUS ONE SHALL LIVE BY FAITH; AND IF HE SHRINKS BACK, MY SOUL HAS NO PLEASURE IN HIM.If you were among the original readers of this book, your logical question at this point would be, What do you mean by faith? That sets the stage for Chapter 11. The word faith is a bit problematical for us, because it conjures up many ideas. It's clearly the key word in Hebrews 11.The only way to be saved is by faith (Ephesians 2:8-10).
